Forum debate .... useless?

07-12-2003, 23:41
Over half of the posts here regarding the latest issue of torture state the legislation is poorly worded and should not pass, yet it is already passing at a rate of 4 to 1.

Either

a. this forum serves no useful purpose

or

b. the people who are voting for this legislation are lying about their intent here.

I dont get it, no matter how I look at this legislation it is bad... romps all over cultural freedoms, while also being one of the most poorly written pieces of legislation this forum has ever proposed.

Is there a way to fix this travesty?

Since the government of Tappee is not a UN member, and does not adhere to any of its rule, will do anything that it feels is necessary to maintain our safety as well as that of our citizen. As for the use of information obtained during torture in the International Court of Law again Tappee does not recognize its authority, nor does it have any say in our Affairs. We will continue to use the information obtain from torture in our court system, and will allow any country to prosecute people in our courts, so that they can bypass the UN’s authority.

Also notice that not one resolution has been declined. They've all been voted for and won by a landslide. What's the use of debating when it's just going to end 10 for and 3 against?

How short our collective memory is....we did manage to defeat EFA. It took a lot of hard work, though, and endless posting here in the forum along with telegramming any and all who were voting for it.

These resolutions are crafted to appeal to the masses-so many do not read them carefully....most make a split second decision and never look back.

It is still interesting to see how the world unfolds within the confinds of the UN.

I read the debates, then I make my own judgement.

The problem is that any fool can create a nation and approve a resolution without knowing anything about the topic, or politics, or anything at all for that matter. If it sounds like it's increasing human rights, it is likely that it will pass, regardless of how poorly worded, vague, or generally dumb the resolution is. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done about this, so we just have to try to get at least a few good resolutions passed and ignore the junk. The good news is, the only thing that affects your nation is the category, so you can pretend that a better worded resolution passed, as it affects your nation in the same way.

If you really fell strongly against a resolution, start a concerted campaign to vote it down. If you don't wish to do that, guit complaining in such general terms.

Not sure if this was directed at my comment, but I'm going to complain about it anyway, as I am always right, regardless of what you think.
1. I am entitled to my opinion, even if I don't start a vast, time-consuming campaign to shoot down one little resolution.
2. The whole point of this forum is to debate the issues, which is what we are doing.
3. The problem is that the majority of the nations don't read the forums. And a lot of those nations are the ones that I hate, who don't know a single thing, but feel that they should vote on an issue just because it seems to increase human rights.
I'm not saying torture is good. I'm just saying that this resolution sounds like a 4th grade school report, and everyone loves it. That's a bad thing, by the way, for you simple-minded folk who are voting for this resolution.
