Legalise the use of recreational drugs

06-12-2003, 12:37
The name of my proposal is "Lower crime- Legalise drugs"
The Empire of Peapowl has a high crime rate as do other nations. I am sure that the illegal use of drugs has got something to do with this. By legalising the recreational use of all drugs crime rates would decrease. The users of drugs would no longer have to commit crimes in order to pay for their habit. Drug laws are just another form of government interference in our lives. Vote for this and you will see crime rates drop and the governments having less control over our citizens.

All I require is two endorsements and I will submit this proposal to the UN

The legalization of (soft) drugs belongs to the field of "life-style" and thus should, in our opinion, be left to the individual nations for decision.

Legalizing drugs will low the crime rate yes, but of course only because it is no longer posecutable. It would NOT eliminate people commiting crimes to pay for drugs, just because they are legal does not mean they are cheaper. If anything all this will do is make drugs more widely available and cause more social problems and drug related crime.

The legalization of all drugs would be disastruous. Instead, to reduce drug related crime, I suggest you bring in harsher punishments.

Should that be rephrased to "all illegal drugs? Because we don't want to ban medical drugs.

However, I agree on harsher punishments for drugs-related crimes. Booyard wishes to cut out all class C drugs and above and also introduce much lengthier jail sentences for offenders concerning class B drugs and higher. For class C drugs, rehab will become mandatory should they be caught.

Also, education on the effects of recreational drugs should be introduced to children at an earlier age so they know about the dangers. Drugs education will help to lower the crime rate and to cut out drugs.

For my nation, I suppose it really depends on whether the intent of the resolution is. If it "urged" UN member states, that would be less offensive than "requiring" member states to legalize drugs. Here in Vegas-di-mare we already have an extremely loose drug policy, so it really wouldn't apply...... but I would never vote for a resolution infringing upon the right of any nation to determine it's own internal policy, barring the obvious (genocide, torture, etc.....)
