Since when in history have nations gone to war without reason?

Even if everyone else in the world thinks they don't, the country who invades is doing it for some reason, maybe not a just reason, but a reason none the less.

Since when in history have nations gone to war without reason?

Oh, you know, whenever it was more profitable to have the land that belonged to someone else?

Romans, Greeks, British, Celtics, probably even the friggen cavemen fought the next mountain over when they saw people swimming in the only pool they had for 20 miles each direction...

And more recently - Who needs a real reason? Just accuse someone of having Weapons of Mass Destruction and you can go to war with anyone you choose.

How are we defining reason in this matter?

Is it as a cause for the actions of a nation (i.e. profit, redress of an insult, general belligerence) or as a legitimate causus belli (as determined by the international community i.e. National Security). All nations have a reason for going to war, whether it is considered "legitimate" is another matter.

A nation is free to do whatever it wants, but going to war without a legitimate reason is very dangerous as the international community will usually rally to the support of the defending nation.

Prediland, all you did was make my point for me.

"Romans, Greeks, British, Celtics, probably even the friggen cavemen fought the next mountain over when they saw people swimming in the only pool they had for 20 miles each direction..."

That is a "reason". Maybe not a just reason, like I said before, but still a reason, none the less.

SGWarning did a much better job exclaiming exactly what I was talking about. Good job. 8)

TO All NATIONS:

The Glenndiator State hereby states that there should not be conflicts among Nations, furthermore a WAR.

All these have to come to an end, whether or not there IS or NOT a reason to go into conflict.

The Swiss State have been based on the idealogy of "Peace and Equality".

I hope that other Nations will be able to adhere to this policy and abolish all kinds of conflicts among Nations.
