VOTING HOLIDAY!

26-11-2003, 18:52
I am starting a topic to dicuss my proposal that we have a world voting holiday, allowing our citizens the time and the opportunity to celebrate the democratic beauty of the vote. No more sqeezing in a vote before work, or running around to vote and pick up the kids after work! This is a huge step for democracy! Endorse my proposal!!

This Holiday will also allow those who are most likely to skip voting because they cannot get away from family and work obligations, thus they have no voice in the democracy, the Holiday will solve this, democracy will be more representative!

People can't be forced to vote. Closing all business' on the proposed holiday would unduly hurt those people who choose not to vote.

You can't dismiss that by saying, "People who don't want to vote, don't have to, and they will be paid for the day either way." Because that doesn't cover all circumstances. What about small business owners who don't have any employees but they themselves?

This proposal is the opposite of freedom, its tyranny. It is anti-free political expression.

Freedom is not free. Voting is the small price you pay for the freedoms that a democracy offers. Without a voting public democracy dies, small business owners can bear the small price of one days closing in order to support the ability for people to vote. Besides as I said before, the people who are most disenfranchised are those who cannot get the time off to vote, who work 2 or 3 jobs and can't get to the polls. It is a small price to pay. Finally, to call a national holiday tyranny is ridiculous, there are national holidays for all sorts of events, are they tyranny? If you are worried about hurting business then make one of your current holidays the same day you vote.
