Why english? English is a complicated and cumbersome language, we should all learn a simpler language, like Aramaean or something.

(I'm just assuming that the "English Act" is all about bt the way)
25-11-2003, 19:42
I'd support such an act. The best argument: "Genetic manipulated" and his spelling errors/lousy English.

That's sort of ironic

How about Esperanto, it was made for international diplomacy!
25-11-2003, 21:26
I would certainly support such an act. But (there always is a but, right)

In our nation English might be the second language our language the language of the people of Euskadi is Euskera. We might be joining the UN but will never join it when we are no longer allowed to speak our own language, which is a symbol of Basque unity against the foreign oppressors.

You see our national animal is the Ipar katamotz, not the Lynx.

We should revert back to Latin as the language of the educated. It's a straight-forward language, unlike English. :P
25-11-2003, 22:16
I think that English should be at least the second language of all nations across the world.
I also believe that English should also be adopted as the worldwide language of trade.

Laws like these are unjust to people who aren't native English speakers. There is not one language for the whole world. My country, Etanistan, has many languages and we say, "Vive la differance!"

Les lois comme ceux ne sont pas justes pour les personnes qui ne sont pas anglophones. Il n'y a pas une langage pour tout le monde. Mon pays, Etanistan, a beaucoup de langues et nous dison, <<Long live the difference!>>

:D

Yes true, but we do need some sort of common language, since we don't have a magic Star Trek like translator and lets face it, enforcing an artificial or dead language such as Esperanto and Latin just won't work.
The English language has several advantages
1) It’s adaptable.
2) It’s very common.
3) It’s an excellent analytical language
4) It’s poetic easy to sing (apparently).
5) It is efficient.

How about we don't assume racial superiority over other cultures?
26-11-2003, 02:59
Lol. Well lets see, I understand the french... and mostly understand the spanish.

French: Les lois comme ceux ne sont pas justes pour les personnes qui ne sont pas anglophones. Il n'y a pas une langage pour tout le monde. Mon pays, Etanistan, a beaucoup de langues et nous dison, <<Long live the difference!>>

Laws like this are not just for people who do not speak English. There is no one language for the whole world. My country, Etanistan, has many languages and we say <<Long live the difference!>>

...Wow, french class really did help.

As for the Spanish, I don't have full grasp, just what I picked up from two years of summer mission trips to Dominican Republic. But something along the lines of "I am in total favour of using only English. Let's start to talk in only English."

But what are these other languages? I like languages... I'll stop babbling.

한인 만새! 이고 일걸수 아는 사람들 만새. 그리거, 한인들 안태 재송해. 내 한글 스는거 멋해.

I suck at Korean...

Anyway, boo to that resolution.

Nobody's assuming racial superiority. English, while having a large vocabulary, is one of the most versatile languages. But, if you're going for strait-forwardness and efficiency, why not Russian or German...........oh heck, let's just go Orwellian and create our own language...... :)

Why don't we use Mandarin, twice as many people speak that as their first language than English. Of course people will start making excuses about how its so complicated. Not that anyone would bother to consider how difficult it is for a Chinese person to English.

26-11-2003, 04:51
How bout... no universal language? Gee that's a thought.

Your right. Mandarin is VERY complicated. Not to mention extensively large (vocabulary wise). And yes, English is also quite irregular and complex. Most people can't even make the sounds required in the English language (notice how orientals always get the "l" and "r" mixed up? Or how many cultures can't make "th" or "ch" or "sh" sounds?)

That is because some of those sounds do not exist in those languages.

We should go back to grunts and pointing. Sure, there would be more fights and wars over misunderstanding one another, but at least no one would be offended!
26-11-2003, 05:13
Last time I checked we had neither a universal language nor a grunting and pointing method. I don't think our current conflicts are due to language barriers these days.

Mandarin? are out of your tree? Do you know how complicated Chinese is to write in? While the most complex non- asian keyboard will only have 112 keys, the simplified chinese keyboard has 300 keys, how'd you like to learn that keyboard?

Why you people always wanting to make things obligatory? Let everyone speak the language of their choice. If they have a common languange, fine! If don´t, you'll be making new jobs for translators.

Speaking as an ESL teacher, I know that English is widely regarded to be the most difficult language to learn.

It's because we need a pro-economy proposal for the UN that will appeal to the left wing elements within it.

How the hell is this lingustic imperialism going to appeal to the left wing elements of the UN? Hard-line Soviet-style communists, maybe, but certainly not your average cosmopolitan, multicultural lefty. Etanistan is a Scandanavian Liberal Paradise and most of our citizens celebrate linguistic diversity within and beyond our borders.

Most non-authoritative left wingers are as opposed to imperialism as anything else. Monolingualism leads directly to monoculturalism: this resolution is imperialism, plain and simple.
