Restoring the United Nations to its proper role and function

23-11-2003, 18:29
I would ask that you please approve my proposed resolution which is aimed at restoring the United Nations to its proper mandate. It currently reads as follows:

Description: This Resolution is set to return the power and scope of the United Nations to what it is supposed be concerned with, which does not include anything violating the sovereignty of government or lawmaking of a nationstate.

Supporting the proper function and mandate of the United Nations it is advised to:

1. Strictly limit the functions of the United Nations to those of an advisory and peacekeeping body.
2. Enforce the rule that the United Nations not be allowed to tamper with or alter the laws and ideals of a government within a country.
3. Clarify the true functions and scope of the United Nations for the all Nations involved.
4. Realize that it is the right of a sovereign nation to reject the implementation of passed resolution if it:
a) violates the spirit or ideals of that nation
b) is untenable within that nation due to religious practices.
c) violates the theory of understanding of the governmental system within that nation.
d) violates the spirit or ideals on which the United Nations was founded.
5.Encourage the body that screens potential resolutions to be more vigilant in removing those resolutions which violate the United Nations Charter.
6. Render those resolutions which have been passed but remain outside of the United Nations Charter null and void.

I believe the UN is doing it's rightful job. The UN doesn't violate anything however.

Any time it puts resolutions into law which mandate sovereign nations to change its internal laws it has overstepped its boundaries. This violates the UN charter and the principles upon which the United Nations were founded.

Resolutions to alter the function or powers of the UN are considered game mechanics changes. Resolutions to change the game mechanics are not allowed by the mods -- that includes repeals of previous resolutions.

You might consider reading some of the UN documentation, such as the "Before Submitting a Proposal" sticky.

EDIT: Although you can oppose resolutions on the grounds that they violate national sovereignty. I do it all the time.

The resolution does not alter the function of the United Nations. It simply restores the function to what its supposed to be.

I need the proposal in the UN proposal section to be endorsed by your UN Delegate from your region. It is already going well as we are gaining on 10% of what I need in less than the first 8 hours its been posted. The resolution is listed as "Restoring the United Nations".

Thank you for your support.

[OOC: You are confusing two institutions--the "real life" U.N. and the Nationstates U.N. The former is not a governing body; it is a forum for the resolution of international disputes. The latter is, *as the FAQ states*, "the world's governing body." The NationStates U.N. does not have the capacity to resolve international disputes--no such capacity has been programmed into the game. What it *does* have a capacity to do is to change member nations' laws. If you don't want your laws changed, *don't become a U.N. member*. That or find a different game, one where the U.N. works differently. That's all there is to it.]
