Is it possible to repeal past resolutions?

23-11-2003, 10:21
My government wonders whether the mechanism for repealing past resolution through a supermajority of votes exists within the UN charter. We have reviewed the relatvant literature (FAQ) and we find no mention of repeals. If it does not exist, we would most certainly like to propose a resolution that would create said mechanism. Our proposal would require a supermajority (beyond the normal number of votes) of delegates to approve a repeal resolution to come before the U.N., and then a two-thirds majority of votes to pass.

(OOC I understand that this would involve changing the game, and that it's not likely to happen, but I think it's worth a try)

We recognize that the repeal of a U.N. resolution is not a matter to be taken lightly, but that it may be necessary at some point in the future.

Repectfully,

OOC

Actually, after posting I kept reading and just found out why this is impossible. Game Mechanics changes are forbidden. Perhaps if a new version is written, it might be allowed. My Bad

Proposing a resolution to change it would hardly have helped.

There are (or were) discussions going ahead with [violet] about the technicalities of a "repeal" category for proposals. Obviously it doesn't exist just yet, but it might do sometime.

Only thing I can think of is proposing a resolution that is opposite in every way to the one which went through.

An even easier way which would work if the UN ever passed a "gambling" or "gun control" resolution would be just to change the "effect" column. In other words, "gun control: relax" can be effectively cancelled by "gun control: tighten".

personally i think all types of resolution should have a full range of choices, like the drugs, guns and gambling ones do...

(i've wanted for a while to try and make an anti-free trade resolution...)

it'd be easier than having a way to repeal resolutions for the admin team, and it'd also be simpler to use for players...

But writing a resolution to counter the resolution which passed is acceptable, right?

A qualified yes. It depends on how you categorise it. To take a classic example, the "Stop Dumping Start Cleaning" resolution was an "Environmental" one. A lot of people then proposed "counter-resolutions" with text which set out to reverse the just-passed resolution. The problem was that they were classified as "Environmental" as well, and so would have had the opposite effect to the text if they'd passed.
