Tolkien Appreciation Day

Etanistan
21-11-2003, 22:09
The Most Serene Republic of Etanistan is pleased to announce the posting of the proposal for Tolkien Appreciation Day. We strongly encourage UN delegates to vote for it and will be happy to answer any questions.

We have intentionally made provisions for each member nation to be completely free in their decisions about how to celebrate Tolkien Appreciation Day, slated for 17 Dec. 2003 (in Etanistan for sure, hopefully worldwide should this resolution pass).

While Etanistan feels there should be absolutely no restriction to Tolkien's or any other literary works, we intentionally added the adverb "unreasonably" to the last provision, which says that member governments may make no laws unreasonably restricting access to the works of Tolkien or Peter Jackson's films. This allows for governments to make their own calls on what constitutes a "reasonable" restriction.

The Imperial Council of the Grand Duchy of the Lateran is pleased to confer honourary citizenship posthumously on J.R.R. Tolkein. Applications may also be submitted for consideration of same on the part of those still living who demonstrate an adequate filial loyalty to Tolkein and his ideals.

Unfortunately, the hegemonic despots who get to be UN moderators have decided that Tolkien Appreciation Day is too much connected to the "real world," according to a recent telegram to Etanistan. Ironic, I think. Since when is Middle-Earth the "real world"? In some countries on Nation States it actualy IS the real world. Granted, the resolution would be difficult to negotiate in game terms, but c'mon can't we have FUN in this silly game? Stupid fat hobbitses, can't stand anything that doesn't fit easily into their trixy game mechanics!

(note that I don't take any of this nearly as seriously as it appears)

As one of the "hegemonic despots" you're talking about, can I make the point that a proposal to make the author Chuck Palahniuk a "world treasure" or somesuch was deleted for much the same reason as yours was? There are precedents out there and case law available to check your proposals against.

Relax, I was just joking around. I hope I didn't get a bad mark for this! I actually see your reasoning, I just thought it would be fun for all the other nerdy governments out there. :D

I realize you have to cut down on proposals somehow and mine just didn't make the cut.

I do have to say that there ought to be MORE CATEGORIES for proposals. They don't have to be infinite, but some proposals won't fit into the existing categories.

Etanistan, couldn't agree with you more about the need for more categories. If I thought there was much of a chance that they'd be accepted, I'd actually canvass people's opinions on what else should be added.

I didn't mean to sound like I was taking things too seriously, it more a way of preventing people from leaping in and saying "see, the mods are biased blablabla".

I'm a nerd and im proud! I support Dec. 17 to be international Tolkien day. It also celebrates the leader's (me, Tex) 7 months 'till birthday. There will be great festivities, with televised readings of his complete works. It may take days, but for that and the week after, we shall celebrate the works of Tolkien. Also, marathons of the LoTR series...The third will be out (Realtime) in december, 3rd Wednesday I think...

Good move! Who would you canvass about getting more categories? Etanistan would help.

I'm glad we will not be celebrating alone! Thanks for your support!

Re: Tolkien Recognition Day

Whilst the government of The Commonwealth of Treeonia understands and appreciates the position of certain authoritative leaders, we, as a tree loving nation, would acknowledge the Ancient Order of Ents for their personal contribution and losses during the Taking of Isengard.

We dedicate a statuary in the likeness of Lindenroot, as well as Treebeard, in the town square of Pines Cone, province of Coniferous, Commonwealth of Treeonia. May their roots grow deep.

Regards and may the Trees bless your good fortunes.

Ahem.

Let it go forth, that :

Tolk's work is hell good, and if you don't like it, your opinion will not be counted. And at the risk of sounding shallow, the movies are * so * cool.

Oh yeah, studying works by Tolkien would have been far more interesting the being stuck with 29 other advanced english students being bored with Othello. Although I did get to do Othello's lines. . . and I discovered that some people in our class had very interesting interpretations of the word strumpet . . . And Iago is geat.

Oh yeah, we were talking about Tolkien, oh, well, serious opinion :

Tolkiens works are really good literature, clasics. However, due to previous attempts by individuals to have R.W. individuals recorded in the annuals of history and achievement, being shot down due to their being of the R.W. and not . . . stuff it with cheese, some one else can explain.
