Ahem. I have a message for the nations who supported the EFA resolution or for it with altered wording. There is a proposal before the vote now which will accomplish the goals of EFA:

A resolution to improve worldwide human and civil rights.

Description: In light of the fact that the massive universe known as Nation States contains many sentient species, all past or future UN acts that refer to "human rights," "mankind," or the like shall be considered to refer to all sentient species.

Approvals: 4 (Xaqon, Gemfish, Landsberg, Tarrican)

Status: Lacking Support (requires 121 more approvals)

Voting Ends: Sun Nov 23 2003


The proposal will take care of the “Elven/Alien/Etc.” issue in one fell swoop and it has the added advantage of covering all future UN “Human Rights” resolutions. I urge all UN Delegates to support this proposal so that the UN can bind up it's wounds and move away from the EFA issue once and for all.

OOC: I was bored and looking through the proposals when this one caught my eye.

This is a bit better than EFA--it certainly doesn't protect plants or microbes. We're still a bit worried, because "sentient" is such a vague term. It's often used to apply to creatures that can have any form of experience, which while it leaves out plants and possibly some extremely simple animals, almost assuredly includes all vertebrates.

We'd prefer the proposal if it used a phrase like "posessing personhood" or "full self-awareness" or something similar.
