Restriction on abortion resolution in the United Nations

19-11-2003, 02:10
For a period of 20 years, the Grand Duchy of (United) Urbanicans proposes that no debates on the United Nations floor on abortion, or resolutions relating to abortion, be voted on or allowed in the assembly. The United Nations is also forbidden from placing sanctions on countries for their stances on abortion for that period.

The Duchy proposes this because abortion is a serious topic that the United Nations has no business in forcing on other countries, and each country should deal with the problem as they see fit.

The Most Serene Republic of Hyper Evilness must respectfully disagree with the Grand Duchy of Urbanicans. Any restriction of debate in this forum only degrades our ability to conduct democracy. The abortion issue being contained in small threads in the United Nations forum and occassionally proposed as a resolution does not have an overall negative impact on the assembly as a whole. It is better that we discuss important and timely issues than to pretend they do not exist.

Exactly.
The forum would either be full of threads on what can be debated or debates on "playstations for all" type proposals.

What would you class this proposal under? The restraining of democracy?

Although many people see abortion as wrong, myself included, I do not think it is the place of the UN to impose a restriction on the debating of abortions, it would be much more sensible to reach a final decision than to prevent one being reached for twenty years.

Agreed. After all, whipping out those debating guns and duking it out is a lot more fun than pretending the issue doesn't exist. Maybe nobody convinces anybody but themselves... but hey, the smell of verbal cordite is a drug that surpasses no other!
