Ok People - Time To Take Action

16-11-2003, 00:49
So we are all (practically) agreed that the now infamous EFA resolution is insane, and a threat to the very existence of humanity.

We accept that it is so vague that it is effectively open to any number of disparate interpretations, and legitimises imperialism on behalf of anyone who is so inclined, for they could use this resolution to their advantage and to accuse another nation of crimes against humanity (or should that be all living beings - I don't know and United Middle Earth sure as hell doesn't seem to have a clue either).

If you are, more or less, in agreement with these two points, then NOW is the time for YOU to take action.

I suggest that a group of us gets together and writes an eloquent case against this proposal, we all copy and paste it, and then we take the list of those who voted for the resolution, and divide it between us, and each agree to telegram a certain number of nations each (obviously the more of us there are, the less we will each have to do),.

Please, please don't be shy - any help will be appreciated.

The future of mankind, our children, lies with us - act now or live, and die, with the consequences.

Let it be known that the Cowes Government condemns United Middle Earth for this insane proposition.

Cowes has been asking many senior delegates to vote against this measure - somewhat successfully. Major points include that it is absurd to try to change the food chain, and that a resolution should be passed on human rights, but not this one.

Hopefully the delegates will come to their senses before Wednesday/

How do we know who voted for it? Where do we go to find out?
Collaboration is willing to help, but somewhat muddled.

I posted a form letter in the other thread, and elaborated on it a bit since:

=====
Greetings fellow UN member!

I noticed you have voted in favor of the UN Resolution "Equality For All: A resolution to improve worldwide human and civil rights." At first glance, it seems like a helpful Human rights resolution. My friend, I must tell you it is not!

Look carefully at the wording of the laws that would be enacted under this Resolution:

"-All living beings no matter who or what they may be, have the inherent right of existence."

This is not limited to Human beings, but to EVERY living thing, including plants, animals, and any other source of food for human beings. If this law were inacted, your people have no choice but to starve to death, or risk harming a living thing. If your country has laws concerning abortion or capital punishment, this resolution would ban it outright. Worst of all, it prohibits doctors from perscribing antibiotics to kill living bacteria, so people with easily-curable diseases would be forced to allow the harmful organisms to fester inside themselves.

The resolution continues:
"That they may live as they see fit as long as they do not cause harm to another. In simpler terms "Live and let live." If a nation employs slaves for labor for example, we submit that they must end the practice or leave the UN voluntarily."

"Live and let live" is particularly vicious in this context. To quote the leader of The 510 Techcropolis:

"In addition to the inability to use antibiotics and other serious issues generated by the wording, there is a very sinister clause that is being overlooked (above). This single sentance voids thousands of laws and legal regulations world wide. If a person drives 70 mph infront of a school (until they hit a child), or does not see it fitting that they pay any taxes, or manufactures explosives and leaves them where children or criminals can get them, then they will have done nothing that the government can find fault with, according to this resolution."

Look at what this resolution says as opposed to what it really means. The premise for "Equality For All" is a fallacy. It is worded in such a way as to deny people the most basic Human right: Life. Please reconsider your vote in favor of this resolution.

=====

I also hope these aren't considered spam. I've sent it to five or six countries so far. Please let me know if I should add anything else to this letter, and feel free to use it yourselves to lobby other countries in your region.

looks like a good form letter, I created a shorter one of my own and sent it to the largest of the pro resolution delegates
16-11-2003, 04:54
I've sent it to the newest votes in favor of the resolution: Metlaha[2], Jarbonia[4], Boischatel[19], Crystal Chrysanthemum[2], Not America[2], Cynosia[4], Heaven or Hell[2], Quite[2], New Tasmania[2], and Neo-Ottoma[4]. I figured these countries were more likely to be around and can change their vote quickly.
16-11-2003, 05:27
I tried to be as courteous as I could about messaging delegates of other countries. I sent a message to the main ones (Pacific, North Pacific, etc.), as well as any delegate who controls over 10 votes and has voted for this resolution. I have also added them to my Dossier, and periodically check up on their region's message boards. I'm happy to see a couple of them actually changed their votes! Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be enough (we're only down 2:1, better than the 10:1 this morning).

The argument about this being a good resolution if interpreted correctly is very, very fallacious. A resolution cannot be "interpreted", to avoid deviation from what it's supposed to do. A UN resolution should clearly state the problems it is attempting to deal with, as well as the proposed solution, for example:

Recognizing that every human has the right to prosper,
I propose to outlaw slavery

Or something like that, not:

All living beings are important, so leave them alone.

I also tried to be as polite as possible and to reduce spam only sent it to delagates of 15+ votes I also sent one to my delegate (The South Pacific) who has yet to vote

There is allready an ammendment in the works to close the loopholes. The Clarification of Equality proposal would limit the scope of EFA to only sentient species, though nations who wished to extend those protections further within their own borders would be alloed to do so.

If you want equality for sentient races without going overboard, then help get some support for this ammendment.
Letila
16-11-2003, 05:49
If the resolution passes, we will vote for the amendment, but we could still starve by the time it passes.

And the fact that there are ammendments out there that will close the loopholes in it.

Voting for Clarifiation of Equality ends a day before the votes on EFA end. If we don't support it now we won't have an amendment ready should EFA pass.

It seems that in the last 24, the NO camp has gotten about 2.5-3 votes for every vote in the YES camp, so it looks like people are getting the message either by reading the forums, or through the massive lobbying effort.
