Make Issues and Proposals More Universal

08-11-2003, 02:47
Recently some of the issues we have received, as well as proposals before the U.N., seem to presuppose that every nation in the world has the same structure as the United States. For example, the issue we just received involves "term limits" for "Senators". We don't have "Senators" in Ursoria, since we have a parliamentary system, and the term length for our parliamentarians fluctuates, depending on the length of time our Parliament happens to sit.

Another example concerns the "Stop Dumping - Start Cleaning" resolution recently passed by the U.N., which refers to both a possible sentence in a "federal prison" and a possible fine of "up to $10,000"--ignoring the fact that most nations have neither a federal system of government nor the dollar as their unit of currency.

Do we constantly have to remind Americans that the U.S. is not the only country in the world?

Good point.
Maybe a reminder of this fact could be added to "How to make a proposal".

I also have a suggestion.

It is the view of this government that the fact that the UN is not a legislative body in and of itself should be strengthened via resolution. Proposals can be found saying that the right to arms be ratified as a resolution, that the death penalty be abolished/imposed, that homophobics be banned etc. However, it is our opinion that such decisions belong to each individual country to make.

Thus, it is our humble suggestion that a clause be created clarifying the true role of the UN. This is our stance.

The fact is, though, that the NationStates UN has considerably more power than the real-world one ever can. The FAQ makes (or made) this very clear by explaining that you can't pick and choose the UN resolutions you adopt.
My understanding as a moderator, based on discussions with [violet] several months ago, is that there are plans afoot in the long term to allow the repealing of resolutions but that this is the furthest that reforms will go. Ultimately, if the UN is able to handle proposals headed "Gun Control: Relax", then that's the way the UN runs.

We have consistently fought for the same principle. Without much success, alas.

Just who is this "Violet" anyway? We've seen a lot of references to her, and from the context it appears that she must be sitting on a golden throne at the right hand of Our Father in Heaven.

I second that. I'm not asking for dollars to be replaced by pounds (or even elfs) but for some universal word to be used for monetary units and political structures.
