Not really... there's a lot of people who think nuclear weapons nearly caused WW3, and certainly escalated tensions that didn't need to be escalated.

During the Cold War, an American study of the nuclear weapons gap showed the US ahead three to one.
Kruschev was afraid that crazed Americans would turn their venom on the Soviets and kill all his people.
Americans were afraid that any of us would die. We tend to freak out when any of our guys die (i.e. Somalia)
Result? No open conflict between the USSR and the USA. As they were both armed, they sought peace.
