I propose we build a 400 foot gold statue of Ronald Reagan
Dear UN-
I would like to dedicate this adress to a special man: Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan, as we all know, was a fine president, and an even greater actor. But aside from that, he's dead. Or should I say, as dead as someone that is alive can get. When the Clinton Administration took over, it came as an overwhelming shock to him and his republican buddies. The consequence of this shock, as we all know, gave him Parkinson's disease. But there is one thing we can do before he kicks the bucket! I think we should use the 400 million dollars allotted for saving those damn whales and birds, and using it to erect a giant naked statue of Ronald Reagan...made of gold. While the Republic of Bio-medical-rejects does not have much in common with the United States, when we were at war with the Confederacy of Fucreoieatardheads, Reagan was there to give us inspiriation. So let's win one for the Gipper.

In america I am sure you get any support you want.

"In the 1980's there was a consensus among the members of the national media that Ronald Reagan was going to fail and that he was going to bring on economic disaster. But...the economy didn't collapse. In fact, it soared to unprecedented levels.
The media stubbornly refused to admit that "Reaganomics" was responsible. The drumbeat of negative opposition to the president's policies continued through the 1980's. By 1986...the ratio of negative to positive stories was seven to one. In other words, as the economy was improving, media reports on the economy becoming increasingly negative.

Far from the truth. Overall, the eighties represented a modest economic performance; better than the anemic seventies but unspectacular. The Carter depression lasted through 1982, then there were a couple of strong years, and then the expansion slackened.
Average annual real GDP growth for the eight fiscal years associated with Reagan's presidency (1982~1989) was about 3.5% - compared with about 4.1% for the period between Korea and Vietnam (fiscal 1955~1965), about 2.7% for Carter's term, and 7.3% for the New Deal era (fiscal 1934~1940, including the recession caused by the temporary retreat from the New Deal in 1937). I don't have figures for the twenties handy, but one source says that GDP doubled in that decade, which corresponds to an annualized growth of about 7%.
Unemployment for fiscal 1982-1989 averaged 7.3%, and inflation averaged 3.9%, on 3.5% growth. For fiscal 1955~1965, unemployment averaged 5.3% and inflation 1.4% on 4.1% growth. For fiscal 1994~2000, unemployment was 5.1% and inflation was 2.5%, on 3.9% growth. The Reagan era compares unfavorably with both these peace time periods in growth, inflation, and unemployment, the three main economic indices. It also compares unfavorably with the New Deal era and the twenties in both economic growth and inflation.
The irony of the situation is that "Reaganomics" was a hybrid political compromise and bore little resemblance to Reagan's original ideas. The core of the supply-side program, tax cuts for the wealthy, was accompanied by large increases in Federal spending, so that on balance the government (by borrowing heavily) was absorbing more investment funds than ever before. Reaganomics was a confused, poorly implemented demand-side program, not a supply-side program.
