Return of the Anti-Monopoly Resolution!

Baudrillard

We failed to reach quorum by 39 votes last time -- I've re-worded some parts of it to indicate that much of the resolution's execution is at the national level (just as it was before). Let's get quorum this time, fellow delegates! :D

BE IT RESOLVED,

That in understanding that the development of national, regional, or international monopolies or cartels of raw or finished goods reduce competition and thereby injure the premise and practice of free trade;

That members of the United Nations pledge to remain non-aligned with industrial cartels of raw or finished products;

That members of the United Nations pledge to closely self-regulate their industries so that monopolies, interlocking directorates, or cartels be dissolved;

That members of the United Nations practice embargoes with any existing monopoly or cartel, including those who are sponsored by nations not affiliated with the United Nations.

I have a better idea--let's NOT punish people for being good at what they do.

We've been through this argument before. Let's not punish people in order to extract wealth from them by developing monopolies and cartels.

I have an even better idea - Why not let nations decide for themselves by selecting whatever option they want on the applicable issue? :P

Be aware, folks, that some examples of monopolies are those that government (in most places) maintains in fields like the provision of utilities like heat, power, and water, in the administration of justice, detaining suspected criminals, trying them, and executing sentences against them, and many of the other common functions of government. Passage of this would require massive deregulation in many industries for most nations.

I oppose this proposal for a variety of reasons, but I think this one would appeal most broadly to UN member nations.

I believe that certain monopolies cause the world to function better. If we encourage monopoly tycoons to share their wealth then the more of a monoply they have the more they can share.

I would go further and put an outright limit on corporate size. Giant holding companies are not technically monopolies because their holdings are so diverse, but their centralized power is detrimental to every local economic base.

Does this "monopoly" also apply to government? or... What happens if the government and business are one in the same?

So... we can't have a single stable government and instead must section it and create inefficient conflicting organizations.
