Anti-Asteroid Defense

A resolution to improve world security by boosting police and military budgets.

Category: International Security Strength: Strong Proposed by: Debaermania

Description: Honourable representatives of your peoples,
It is with extreme gravity that I announce to you the impending collision of a celestial body with our planet. This asteroid, which is several kilometers in diameter, should enter collide with the Earth in 2017. In order to envisage and to possibly counter a catastrophe, our government proposes:
1/ the creation of a council gathering more scientists of our planet in order to decide on a world action to undertake.
2/ the allowance by the United Nations of special funds intended to finance the actions decided by the council.
3/ the coordination of all space agencies in order to support work of the council as well as possible.
4/ the financial participation of all the Member States of the United Nations by a percentage of their GDP (to be defined).

It is for the survival even of our species and our civilizations that it is vital to act now.

Claudie-Andrée Dehaye
Minister for fundamental research of Debaermanie

Artifical gravity projection, I suggest you get on it. (America, Russia, China, Japan) If this object can be brought into Earth orbit at a safe distance from the planet, it could be a valuable resource for the development of Space Technologies.

Unless you can show with reasonable confidence that artificial gravity projection technology can be developed to a sufficient degree within the necessary time frame, then I would suggest finding an alternative plan based on technologies that are more immediately available.

Redirect that thing into Jupiter's gravity well. That massive gas giant served the solar system well where Shoemaker-Levy Nine was concerned. If we can not exploit the massive mineral wealth it represents, we need to get rid of it.

Commendable, but is the technology required for a redirection of this magnitude presently availble? If not, can you show that it will become available quickly enough to be employed?
