Delegates--please approve "Fishing Quotas" proposa

03-10-2003, 09:27
I just submitted this proposal to create fishing quotas on migratory fish and fish living in international waters in order to maintain a sustainable fishing population. Otherwise, one nation overfishing may ruin another's economy and way of life.

Thanks!

*bump*

Come on folks, time is running out. If people don't approve it when I bring it to their attention this way, then I'll have to go the way of others and start spamming them to approve!

I'll fish as much as I want.

And it isn't spam, admin ruled that already.

The Protectorate of Grotia will harvest as much of the sea's bounty as it wishes, unless a law is passed by the UN. Currently, we vote against this proposal.

I've got a better idea--let's let people do what they want with what's theirs.

Yeah but fish isn't any one person's property. If you let everyone fish as much as they want, there won't be any fish left. I think sustainability absolutely has to be a concern of any government. You cannot allow private buisness to dictate the future of limited natural resources: clearly it's in the best interest of each firm to fish as much as possible- even if they believe in sustainability, they cannot count on their fellows to share this sentiment, and thus to remain competitive must fish until there's no fish left.

You see that argument WOULD work... if fish had rights. Which they don't.

SO you don't think sustainability, diversity and the enviroment should be any concern to the state? We should just clear cut, fish and mine our way into a wasteland?

The problem is, it's not theirs. Fish which live in their waters they can fish as much as they want--they aren't effected by this proposal. Fish in international waters are not theirs, and migratory fish that may migrate between several countries do not belong to any one of them either. Acting like they do is what could cause the fishing economy to collapse in the other countries
