Free Speech

Please approve my UN proposal entitled "free speech." It's pretty simple that most people should understand it. I'm not going to lobby though I might repropose it in a few weeks and lobby that time. Salutes!

I don't agree with free speech as I believe it could be used to blaspheme against the name of the Lord God Almighty and also be used to try and overthrow the Church, which has already happened once in Catholic Europe due to the laxing of free speech laws.

How about this, if you can prove that "the Lord God Almighty" exists beyond a reasonable doubt, and that he minds what people say, then I'll believe you okay?

Let's not turn this into a religious arguement.

There is no way to prove that there is or isn't a god so it is kind of a waste of time to argue about it.

Religious arguments are the start of too many wars. Put the dispute behind you. If you don't like the proposal, you don't have to endorse it.

very true, it's a matter of faith. But freedom of speech will allow people to tell lies about my government and turn my people against me. For the lives and safety of my people, this can not be allowed. I do not want to have to kill those who speak against the supreme ruler for the purposes of damage control. Out lawing free speech save me the time and bother by allowing me to just throw offenders in jail for a short time.

If you think like that then you deserve to be overthrown

Free speech doesn't undermine republics or democracies... it only undermines authoritarian regimes and tyrannies.

Sure. Without free speech we wouldn't be here arguing with each other over whether we should have free speech or not.

I'm all for it all the way. People will always rebel whether or not they have the freedom of speech. I think more poeple will revolt if they DON'T have the freedom of speech.

Good Sir,

The Commonwealth of CoOpera heartily supports the Freedom of Speech as the bedrock of Democracy and shall endorse any proposal that secures this essential liberty for all Humanity. Provided the final proposal's wording does not somehow narrow the definition of "speech", you may count on CoOpera's uncompromising cooperation in this matter.

"The only security of all is in a free press. The force of public opinion cannot be resisted when permitted freely to be expressed. The agitation it produces must be submitted to." - Thomas Jefferson to Lafayette, 1823
