the impact of NationStates United Nations organization
Does the UN really have an impact on the game play? Most of the impact I've seen are the issues given, choices available, and the scripted affects of each choice. I do not see the UN having and it's many resolutions having ANY affect on the actual game. I like to spin my wheels once in a while but not all of the time if you know what I mean. There seems to be quite a bit of thinking and work bring put into many of the resolutions. Is all that happens is showing that "Hey, I'm smarter than you because of the resolution I wrote?" That's great fun.
Anyway, who needs the NationStates UN since it has no impact on the game?

UN resolutions do have an impact on the mechanics of the game and your nation if they are passed. If you're a UN member.

If you RP in contravention of a UN resolution and you are a UN member, then you can get very grumpy at them.
ha nice. i've always thought of UN resolutions that pass as another issue that the group has agreed to pass in all member nations.
so for example every day you'll get a couple issues to vote on as a ruler. voting to increase your police force instead of your eduction might push you more towards a dictatorship or authoritarian gov't, might bump up taxes a bit and will change your country description to show you have a strong police force an little crime.
in the same way if you're a UN member and the majority of UN nations vote to increase security measures for example it will have a similar affect to the issue above. (i don't believe this is a literal catagory just an example)
check out the FAQ at the beginning of the forum. it is long but very informative.
though i see from your post on your regional forum you weren't exactly too supportive of the UN...
Yes, you are right. I spent my time as UN delegate for my region reading, considering, and voting. The resolutions aren't enforced. It seems to me that the only affect the UN has on the game is role play. And that is only for the UN members. I enjoy the simulator because the decisions I make have an impact. The UN has no impact that I have seen, unless resolutions passed are automatically throught he system and affect all UN members game descriptions...which I haven't seen.
I suppose role play is the only use of the UN on this simulator and that answers my question.
Thanks!

If I understand correctly, the *categories* of UN resolutions can have other effects on your nations as well, changing the following things (and possibly some others) that NationStates tracks:
quality of environment
level of social equality
levels of economic, political, and civil liberties
crime rate
This can have some effect on your nation descriptions (whether your national animal is going extinct, for example), on your rankings (butsince the resolutions affect all states equally, except for some of the environmental resolutions that impact particular industries, usually only affect your rankings vis-a-vis non-U.N. members) and on your U.N. category.
The actual *content* of resolutions, however, as opposed to their categories, effects only RP.

There is also a small population increase when a resolution is passed in the UN for every UN mamber.

Well good. Being a part of the NS-UN might be useful after all.
