Unpleasantly picky post: "Amend" vs. "Ammend&

16-09-2003, 04:47
Fellow members of the United Nations,

It pains us in The Community of Gurthark to be the bearers of pedantry, however, we humbly request that fellow members of the United Nations note the fact that "amend" has only one "m", and "amendment" has only two.

Typos are completely understandable (we make many ourselves), and of course, not all users of NationStates are native speakers of English. However, after reading the faux words "ammend" and "ammendment" a good dozen times in a row, by a wide variety of authors, our ears feel grated upon, we think justifiably.

Please take this into consideration when writing posts and proposals in the future.

Thank you,

I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only person that has been bothered by this.

I understand what you are saying, however we in Nebbyland feel that so long as what you say can be understood, it doesn't matter how you say it.

There is an example below.

Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in
waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the
frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses
and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed
ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe.

It pains us in The Community of Gurthark to be the bearers of pedantry....

The Democratic States of Cogitation, on the other hand, find twisted joy in being the bearers of pedantery.

Spell checkers can be found here (http://www.m-w.com), here (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/), and here (http://www.dictionary.com).

I hope this helps.

...

DISCLAIMER: The "twisted joy" thing is partly a joke, but those are real links to free online dictionaries. I am not speaking in a moderator capacity, here.
