Space-based defence

Please endorse my proposal, which seeks creation of a space-defence system under UN Security Council control.

The orbital defence grid would greatly aid the operations of the Security Council, and allow speedy enforcement of Resolutions.

The proposal is titled 'Space-based Defence'

How would this 'space-defence' resolution exactly help aid the operations of the Security council?

It'd consist of a huge laser, and every time someone dissented we'd fry them. I think that's the idea this is getting at.

Well...yeah kinda. The network would provide additional military support to UN Missions. Also, it's a missile defence shield. Which is quite good...

And presumably it would be given the capability to intercept small (=<0.5km) near-earth celestial bodies deemed dangerous to human life as well as more terrestrial threats. I approve.

"Absolute power, corrupts absolutely"

I will not endorse such a power/threat for the UN.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

So where does that leave God...?

And since this is the fantasy world of NationStates, we could pretend that space-based missile defence actually works...
Sorry, that was out of character.
I must oppose such a resolution as it constitutes essentially a dubious justification for a massive investement in an unproven weapons system.

Awww. Cmon, it'll be fun. Honest! :D Curse these sensible UN delegate types!

I will not support this proposal and feel that it is an unnecessary waste of money and effort.

All's well and good until some hacker gets it...
And the UN doesn't need large orbital lasers.

My point exactly!

what if an astoriod is coming towerd earth and there is no way to stop it except for blowing it up??? i beleave it is a good idea.

Yes this is a great idea. There's nothing quite like using tax dollars to fund impratical military ventures.

So? There are cheaper ways. Launch a missile at it, or individual nations can use there own military satellite networks (I have one over my nation).
Besides, lasers don't "blow it up". They'd burn a hole, and maybe set it off course.

Oh ok. But only if I can use it to blow up people I don't like.

Actually missiles wouldn't do much to it, either it would do nothing to it (depending on the size) or it would blow it into fragments which would make it worse. You would need to blow somthing up just near enought ot it to set it off course.

I was implying using low-yield missiles to change the course...

You didn't specify........

Well, let's see. We don't want to make it that old kind of space station with just one big laser and small-scale defense systems. You know what happened to the Death Star. What we need is a cluster of medium-sized stations with a few lasers and a wealth of missile weaponry. The result will be small-scale nuclear devastation for those dirty little 9-million population countries who want to defect. We just nuke 'em and don't hurt anyone outside their borders. This cluster of stations could double as a missile-defense grid. After that, it's a simple matter of firewalls and encryption to keep the hackers from getting in. Sure, it will cost lots of tax dollars, but how would you rather have your citizens- poor or dead?
