Regarding unjust and degrading UN category labels

01-09-2003, 19:31
Dear esteemed members of the United Nations,

It has recently come to our attention that the Oppressed Peoples of Womyn Dikes have been unjustly categorized as a "Father Knows Best" nation. We are, quite understandably, outraged at this arrogant and presumptuous attempt to force oppressive patriarchal values and labels upon our fair country. We request an immediate review and revision of the UN category labels to remove all bias of gender, race, religion. socioeconomic class, and so on. We do not wish to have to view the UN as an oppressive body, but if such changes are not made we shall have no choice but to do so.

Sincerely,
Ms. Foxke Lafra
Leader of the Oppressed Peoples of Womyn Dikes

And my country has been unjustly labelled left-leaning college state even though I maxed out on economic freedom and should be capitalizt (high economic/civil, medium political). But it's a game, so who cares?

I hate to tell you but your label is the result of your choices on founding the nation and your answers to the issues.
02-09-2003, 01:33
I agree with the Oppressed Possums. I took a quick look at the Womyn Dikes nation, and it appears to me that this label is well deserved because of the condescending attitude its leader takes toward her citizens. It has been described as a "benevolent dictatorship." Best wishes shedding this description, Womyn Dikes!

We regret that the United Nations has shown such a discouraging response to our reasonable request. Very disappointing.

Sincerely,
The Oppressed Peoples of Womyn Dikes

(Sidenote: Heh, I know it's a game and that the category listing results from game choices. Duh. I was attempting to kick-start some sort of dialouge on the subconsciously patriarchal overtones of the category listings and possibly the UN itself, since it would be IC for my nation to be vigilant about that, but perhaps I didn't make myself very clear.)

Your name makes it clear. Womyn? How feminist. Dykes? How feminist.. How does your nation of feminist women reproduce after it chases all the men away?

Would you be happy if I said it in character? Ok.

(In character) Those titles are purely factual scientific labels that come from exhaustive research done on each government’s attributes, values, and positions on various issues. I know it's completely factual, because I do the labeling myself! I deemed Father Knows Best State to be a very enjoyable description of your nations government. Am I fair and balanced or what?

Respectfully,
David Bailey, Oonaman Ambassador to the UN.

The cry of lighten-up from some some of the above to the original poster seems a bit defensive, and at times puerile (to be expected).

I understand that "Father knows best" is a commonly used term and, more than often than not, used in an ironic manner, but still someone will inevitably take issue as with all things. this doesn't detract from the reasonableness of the stated claim for a dialogue on the matter: however, Womyn Dikes, you shouldn't expect too much of that here.

But, 2 things:

On reproduction without blokes: parthenogenesis. Anyway according to recent scientific research the redundant Y chromosome (Often regarded as a genetic wasteland) will slowly fade out rendering blokes more redundant than they currently seem to be.

Isn't Womyn Dikes a tautology? or is that irony too?

Of course there are patriarchal overtones. Men own everything. But I think that nitpicking doesn't help you at all. Get an education and start a business if you want to be as successful as men are. No one is holding you back. (How's that for dialogue?)

As a woman, I can understand Womyn Dikes' frsutration with the names. However, I'm not that annoyed by them other than the fact that they don't always seem to correspond with how a nation deals with their issues. But it is just a game, so whatever. It's still fun.

Of course we are! Name something that we are good for. Take the genes from two different females, splice them and you have a perfectly fine product without the negative side effects of cloning. They have eachother for relationships and everything else. Yes sir, our days are numbered!

We the People's Republic Of Amyth would like to note that it is possible for one to get an education, start a business and be as successful as men are, and then procede to nitpick in a very productive manner. If these issues are quitely swept under the carpet the underlying sexist attitudes will never change.

The term "Father-Knows-Best State" makes sense, since this particular rationalization of authority (that the people need said authority because they aren't as fit as those giving the orders) is a patriarchal attitude. For example, how many authoritarian societies have been matriarchal? Not many. Most authoritarian societies have been patriarchal, usually based on the internalized male attitude of "might makes right."

Um. How many societies have been matriarchal, period? As a proportion, I'd be suprised if matriarchal societies were significantly less authoritarian than patriarchal ones.
I thoroughly agree with the original point made by Womyn Dikes. The term "Father-Knows-Best State" is irrationally gender-biased, and ought to be changed, since in most regards this game is fairly good at avoiding the isms.

Perhaps other women can fill that void. I don't know. I'm a lesbian, but I'm not a woman.

I don't know if it's society that gives some people the innate apprehension or disgust toward gays or if it's natural, but if it's natural then you have a valid point. But I still think my point is the best. :)

Have I overestimated my fellow (gender-inclusive) gamers or are the reading comprehension skills of Nation Staters particularly abysmal?

The original post is obviously in character and ironic. Obviously matriarchies can be as rightist as any patriarchy (consider Margaret Thatcher). I'd chalk the reaction to it up to guys who don't date any, except that this denseness that I have noticed touches other issues.

A few hours back on the tech forum, I asked if there were a list of all the official UN Categories with definitions. The labels are very vague while giving the impression of being quite specific. For example, how does a "Scandinavian Liberal Paradise" differ from a "Left Leaning College State"? My request got a few snide "read the FAQs". Well, I already had and all they tell me is that there are 27 UN Categories. This gave me the distinct impression that my respondents could not comprehend either my requests or the FAQs. Which it is doesn't matter, since it doesn't alter my assessment.

If there are any readers out there who can point me to towards the answer, the literate Principality of Lastry would interpret it as a gesture of goodwill.
