I am having trouble connecting to www.nationstates.net. Tried it for a couple of hours.

Is the game server down?

Me too. I've tried for several hours and all I've gotten is the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error. Server problems, right?

I think so. It must be routine maintenance, so we can avoid risks of potentially bad bugs.

they could atleast put up some notice on the fourm or site before they do something like this oh well.

Ok i've just been doing a little googleing to try and find any solutions - it seems that over the past month Spammers have found a flaw in the way forums are built and have been flooding forums throughout the net with automated registrations. I wonder if that is why so many people are having forum trouble - some NSG'ers are finding themselves unable to post.

Mine's royally messed up. The world page is just a total morass of code, and I get this little message at the bottom:

The chrisman union is ranked 1st in the region and 1st in the world for connect error [/home/nation/tmp/ranksock]: Connection refused.

Whoa. Its not meant to do that, is it? IS this a great disk space disaster?

NS 2 is also down, what's happened?

incase this helps with solving the problem here are bugs i have come across:

The main one being that I got logged off after clicking on anything and earlier today the web-page would not even load.

On my nation page:
Fictions is ranked 1st in the region and 1st in the world for connect error [/home/nation/tmp/ranksock]: Connection refused.

On the region page (note i have also been logged out after clicking there
connect error [/home/nation/tmp/ranksock]: Connection refused

on the WA page (again after being logged out):
Recent Events
connect error [/home/nation/tmp/unsock]: Connection refused
Last Decision
connect error [/home/nation/tmp/unsock]: Connection refused

This is what happens when I click on the subheadings (issues, telegrams, dossier, reports, settings)
http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm34/glostickx/hdshdhdhhd/Picture1-4.png?t=1225293199

Yes, there's a game problem. I'm pretty sure the NS1 admins are aware of it, but at least one aspect of the problem requires somebody to be physically present at the server location. That gets more complicated, as OMAC doesn't have staff permanently located at the server farm.

We'll have staff look into it as soon as possible. That's all I can promise at this time.

So would this problem have occurred on the old servers and can the above problem be solved, or is it a continuous factor...

A great disk space disaster?

Not necessarily but all the WA delegate positions are not being properly calculated. Just my two cents: at these situations we normally take the site completely down to prevent possible data damage. I just hope you have backups.

Every time I log onto my nation I get logged on but as soon as I try to move to another page be it region or issues I am sent back to the log in page. This has been going on all day. I have yet to resolve any issues .
If I simple try to go directly to region page after logging in and I do get there that is all I can do . I can not view any of the countries there . I get sent back to the log in page
If I wanted to chage regions or anything I am unable to do so

I began to experience this problem around 8:00 pm (EST) last night, and it took until about 10 this morning for firefox to stop giving me the problem loading page. When I tried to log into my nation then, I could, but whenever I clicked on anything else I was logged out.

Also, both my nation and my puppet got the "Should Democracy Be Compulsory" issue and regardless of what I clicked, I ended up getting a script error.

Anyone else get this problem or know what's going on?

So on two of my puppets, the issues are going through oddly. The National Happenings page informs me that

"89 minutes ago: Following new legislation in Aguazul, ."

Indeed, the sentence that displays my most issue results now reads:

"It's a common sight to see angry commuters with grenade launchers mounted on their vehicles, cities are engulfed by smog, euthanasia is illegal, and ."

My WA puppet was informed that laws had been enacted to bring it "into compliance with the World Assembly resolution ""."

Otherwise, things are working as normal, but the blanks are certainly odd.
Glen-Rhodes
29-10-2008, 20:41
I'm wondering if that's just a bug of no consequence, or if the telegram I got stating that "Laws have been enacted to bring the Commonwealth of Glen-Rhodes into compliance with the World Assembly resolution ""." actually does anything.

Has anybody else in the WA gotten this telegram?

Stupid Tubes.

I use Firefox and I can navigate just fine on NS1. I can post on the board and everything.

The problem is that I have only one issue instead of two today, but can't answer the issue, because when I hit any option (including dismiss), it the answer is a spew of Perl gobbledy gook. That and it's the first democracy issue every nation gets, which as a non-democracy I shouldn't even get.

Most parts are back okay, but there is minor problems as far as issues are concerned. The address bar should normally be like:

In my case it is reading "dilemma=connect error [/home/nation/tmp/dilemmasock]: Connection refused" when it should be dilemma=0 for the issue Should Democracy Be Compulsory?

Another thing, I guess I didn't take a position on an Issue in time and I didn't Dismiss the Issue either, so now the recent happenings says, "Following recent legislation in Inver Brass, ."

I'm not sure if that's a bug in the game or if that's normal when people don't take a stance on an Issue in enough time.

This is a bug in the game that happened last night/today. It's happened to pretty much everyone, but the admins know about it, so just check back later.

Besides, issues do sometimes repeat themselves. I got the compulsory voting issue a few days back for the second time.

The Issue:
In response to a slow news week, certain highbrow newspapers have stirred up the debate over voluntary vs compulsory voting.

I tried to accept my position on this:

"Compulsory voting makes about as much as sense as having the death penalty for attempted suicide," says civil rights activist Elizabeth Rubin. "You can't force people to be free! You can only give them the choice. Besides, if all those derelicts who can't be bothered to get off their ass once every few years voted, who would they elect? I shudder to think."

I got an error message saying this:

Well i keep trying to select option #2 in my issue

Issue
In response to a slow news week, certain highbrow newspapers have stirred up the debate over voluntary vs compulsory voting.

#1 "Compulsory voting makes about as much as sense as having the death penalty for attempted suicide," says civil rights activist Jack Shiomi. "You can't force people to be free! You can only give them the choice. Besides, if all those derelicts who can't be bothered to get off their ass once every few years voted, who would they elect? I shudder to think."

#2 "It's not contradictory at all," argues political commentator Bill Licorish. "The fact is, if not everyone votes, the outcome isn't truly representative. Some groups--like elderly gun nuts--vote more often than others. That's why we always end up with such terrible politicians."

#3 "This raises an interesting issue," says Lars Washington, your brother. "And that is: why do we need elections, anyway? Seems to me it would be much simpler if you just decided what was right, and did it. Wouldn't that save everyone a lot of time?"

All i end up with is this

I never thought moderators used sarcasm. I thought of mods as a robot who acts like human but posts 24/7, bans people every second, and fix problems. By the way, are those issues that I answered yesterday going to be enacted, or just skipped?

With luck the daily update that's currently running will fix affected nations; if not we'll have to add some code to clean it up.

Cause: the daily update ran earlier while the game's backend code was down, and it polluted many nation files with "Connect error" reports.

NS is down for maintenance or something, its still not working though all I get when I try to answer I just get a link to the "Technical Forum" and some techno babble as well...

You lot are right they should have at least warned us, oh yeah does anyone have the issue "Should Democracy be Compulsary" up because everyone I checked with does... may be part of the problem.

My "following new legislation in" messages didn't update correctly about 18 hours ago.

The new ones both say "18 hours ago: Following new legislation in Scheme Parens, ." (Yes, that's the entire message.)

I'm kind of curious as to why this happened.

yeah I got "Should Democracy be Compulsary" too. I have a few nations, and they got that issue too. I just dismissed that issue. it was funny though some nations I would dismiss the issues and then I would click back to the nation and I would have 3 issues or whatever, the same ones I dismissed, and a new one, "Should Democracy be Compulsary"

thats too bad nationstates is experiencing glitches. I'm just glad we can still get on the site :D I know it is separate, but Nationstates2 is also having maintenance. well, I'm curious as to what caused the glitch, maybe we'll find out once it is resolved.

I have the same problem as others have mentioned on the 'Should Democracy Be Compulsory' issue. I dismissed it, and got this:

Yeah, me too, and for the same issue. I got it a couple of days ago, and I'm still waiting for new issues to show up (I'm on two issues daily). I hit "Dismiss All Issues", and it says that it's been dismissed, so hopefully it'll clear out soon.

Yeah, I've got the same message. I didn't try dismissing it, though.

psst.

If most old nations noticed they

all have the should democracy become compulsory or somtin of that sort issue.

Which we have all done at the beginning as the first issue that we encounter
when we make a nation.

like, appearently everyone else, i haven't seen an issue since tuesday, i think it was (or was it monday, or last week?).

bugs, crashes, glitches happen. such is life. my question is: is "the game" down perminently, or; any estimate on when it will be back up?

Is there somethink wrong with Nation States? Because everytime I click an option for an issue for my nation, it says error and doesn't let me do the issue. Then when I log in the same issue is there and there is only one issuse and it is the same one everyday. I am suppose to get two issues a day, and it only gives me one, and it is the same issue over and over! My nation's name is The Alan Worshippng Dictatorship of Dictator Alan Rule!

Don't post "me too"!

Don't post your copy of the problem!

Don't post your suggestion for fixing it!

The fix is in and will take a day or two.

Hi all! Thanks for your patience.

Status update: Everybody should be back to normal within 9 hours.

The bad-issue problem is largely cosmetic, in that your nation doesn't really have the "Should Democracy Be Compulsory?" issue: that just happens to be issue number 0, and it's displayed in place of an error. (You may notice the error if you hover over the link.) The fix we're running will scrub this from your Current Issues list.

Also, the major daily update didn't complete properly yesterday, which, coupled with the server being down for the one before, means the usual kinds of problems ("I didn't get any new issues," "The featured region hasn't changed," "The delegate hasn't changed," "The rankings criteria haven't changed," etc).

There's a daily update running right now, which should complete. A second daily update will run after it, which will catch everybody up, plus scrub the bad issues.

All this takes a long time because there are 70,000 nations!

yup the issue Should Democracy be Compulsory is broken. All the other issues i got so far works.Sry guys I'm sure u no about this already but just wanted to give a update on my nation status.

Good. I did notice the error when hovering over the link, even before [violet] posted about it. And now we all know why everyone got the "Should Democracy be Compulsory" issue.
Citenka

I am sorry, but in times of glitch I managed to vote on the issue about compulsory voting successfully. I did this by manually changing the broken part of the link to the real number of this issue (0). It will not ruin my nation completely? My nation is a democracy, so theoretically it was possible for me to have this issue.
Bomba Stunace
31-10-2008, 20:32
The issues I had before the crash have not registered,

2 days ago: Following new legislation in Bomba Stunace, .
2 days ago: Following new legislation in Bomba Stunace, .

the most important issue was this one:

The Issue
A small nameless nation within your sphere of influence has gone on a genocidal rampage within its own borders, ridding itself of what their Supreme Ruler For All Eternity, Emperor Dave O'Bannon, refers to as 'those pesky Bigtopians'. Some escaped refugees are requesting that your government do something to end the slaughter of millions.

Option 3
Well, maybe this nation does have something we need, sir," says Hope Hanover, your Military Advisor, while perusing a giant map of Bomba Stunace. "We're fast running out of land and resources here, so why not invade this place, kick out whoever's in power there, and take over? We've got the military power, so why wait? If any of those hippies in the region have somethin' to say about it, they can say hello to our missile programmes, haha!"

None of that has registered in my Nation, I dont even remeber what the other issue was and dont really care, but the outcome of my decision on the genocide issue is huge and is not recorded in the game.............

any advice or tips ?
