There's a list or a link in one of the Gameplay stickies, I think.

NS mods and admins have zero control over those damn things, more's the pity. Maybe we'll get a shot at it in NS2.

Not really.

When NS was NS and not Jolt, we had unique NS titles that sounded like NS.

When NS was Jolt, we had Jolt titles that were stupid and sounded like munchkin kiddy gamers.

And now that NS is OMAC, we have OMAC titles that simply sound lame ass and generic.

That all reminds me of George Calins wonderful rant on how American English steriliseds "shell shock" into PTSD.

On that note, I see that, at least one person's managed to reach a point where they can set their own.

although I am not sure(95% I'm probably wrong), I think that at 15,000 posts you are able to set custom titles. It would seem to be in order with everything else. I'm wondering though, can you guys set up Avatars yet?

but mods I believe you should have some sort of limit to the ability to create your own titles. People might be able to fool younger players by
putting "NationStates Moderator Team" in their title. And while it would be pretty simple to catch them and they would have no real power. Newer players might follow what they say.

Since Mod Impersonation is a deletion offense, and people with 15,000 posts typically took 3-5 years to get there, I'm not all that worried about the possibility. They might get a few hours or days out of it, but then they'd lose their nations and forum accounts. That's a pretty high price for such a small win.

The whole game is just words. The words create the atmosphere. When we had NS titles, they added to the flavor. Jolt's titles didn't, but, as I just said, at least they were original. OMAC's titles strike me as yet another ominous step towards sterile, McDonald's homogenization.

Another pointless update forced on NSG; the guinea pigs of the jolt forums! I liked my old title of Honorary Forum Owner...

You were one of the extremely rare ones then. Most people hated being called "Adminbot's Boyfriend", "Possible SOF Spammer", or "Cabbage Patch Girl". You weren't an "Honorary Forum Owner" either, you were an "Honorary spam Forum Owner (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13846997&postcount=4).

There have been multiple threads about overall dissatisfaction with User Titles in the Technical forum, where such threads belong. NS Mods took them to Jolt admins, where our opinions were evaluated along with the opinions of representatives of the other Jolt Hosted Communities. It's hardly something that was rammed down our throats without notice - we've been pestering them about this for 2 years now.

I can't say I care for the bland titles - I would have preferred something specific to NationStates. However, the software isn't that clever - all changes to user titles are global - so they compromised with something relatively bland.

NationStates is more than NSG. We've got two forums devoted to discussing this sort of thing, and many Generalites have managed to add their two cents. If you don't participate in the process, you're in no position to bitch about the outcome.

Technical? That would explain a lot. I had thought of putting it there but my brain decided against it much to the dismay of my common sense - not much consulting happens between the two these days. They've officially decided they're at war with each other.

Alas...

Oh well. I do see your point, Fris. Probably my fault to not logging in more often like a glassy eyed obsessed generalite.

Oh.... there is more to NationStates than just this forum? *removes the blinders only to scream in pain at the amount of light coming in*

I agree, but insulting your users doesn't strike me as a smart way do go, blandness aside. The old titles may have had gender issues, but that's not nearly as much of a slight as someone who doesn't know you making a judgment about how much you need to get out. That doesn't seem like something that needs lots of user input -- rather, common sense. You might playfully mock your clientele, but you shouldn't insult them. That's assuming you'd like to keep them.

I'm far from seriously offended by the new title I've been given, only annoyed. And seriously, we'll all get over it, as most posters I'll wager don't really notice the titles until they get close to a turning point.

Also, there'll be no choice.

Well, except for the one or two posting here who seem to delight in showing off that they DID get to choose. How does that work? Just sheer number of posts? Over 15k? Is that policy or just a perk for those who request it?

EDIT: from the Tech forum, 15k posts.
Intangelon
30-07-2008, 19:58
I'd wager that most posters don't really pay attention to titles except right around the time when they're changing. Didn't someone, PM maybe, have to ask what is own title used to be before the recent switch?

I'm disappointed, but it's below minor. 15k and your own title is something to shoot for, I suppose. At my rate of posting, though, it'll be 2011.

In the meantime, I don't really like being told (oddly, by the forum that seeks to retain users, I should think) that I need to get out more. Were everyone to follow that advice, the site would have fewer hits, which (and I'm not certain about this) would potentially lower revenue from ads, wouldn't it? The customer isn't always right, but that doesn't mean they should be insulted for being their customer.

I mean, seriously, the folks writing these couldn't think of anything more clever than "I like to post"?
They're more concerned with sorting through technical issues than being clever, I'm afraid. NS got lucky in that our moderation staff does pretty well with humor and cleverness. I'm not seeing that as a Jolt or Jolt Hosted Community thing, to be honest. As asinine as some of our players and mods can be at times, our worst appears comparable to their best more often than not.

If custom titles are an option, is there a reason they couldn't be allowed for all posters rather than just those crazy "need to get out more" folks?

Even if we had the mod ability to edit custom titles, I'm not interested in having to scrutinize every 5-post newbie to see if he chose "Bad Muthafucka" as his user title. If they've lasted 15,000 posts, they've managed to learn the limits of forum rules and standards. You could maybe make a case for reducing it to 5,000, but it's not worth the battle IMHO.

You must have more actual posts than just under 11k then. Before the purge?

Since Mod Impersonation is a deletion offense, and people with 15,000 posts typically took 3-5 years to get there, I'm not all that worried about the possibility. They might get a few hours or days out of it, but then they'd lose their nations and forum accounts. That's a pretty high price for such a small win.

Yeah it took me just under 4 years to get to 15,000 posts and I'll be hitting 5 in 3 months and I have only advanced this many posts since.

touche...but you know their will be that one person who will do it.

why should one ruin it for the rest of us?

Custom titles after 15k posts? Are they encouraging spam? I thought we just purged the forum.

dedication =/= spam

Well... to be honest, we had hoped that we could return to those titles. Sadly, member titles are a global thing, so we can't do anything about it. At least these are better than what Jolt used to have.

why squabble over the little things Hack :) Jolt > old forums (remember those?)

I wonder what happens at 20,000 :)?

I'd believe it. Still, "I like to post" is pretty pathetic.

Yeah, it occurred to me after I posted that many newbies would probably try to be "funny" by making obscene titles, and that would likely be more trouble than it was worth. Le sigh.

(On the other hand, maybe it could be either 15,000 posts or, say, two years' membership, whichever comes first, so as not to leave all the loyal-but-not-so-talkative forumites like myself out in the cold? Would that even be possible?)

Nope, can't be. I lost less than 1000 posts in the purge, so apparently the cut-off isn't 15,000 after all, seeing how I just tried and was able to change mine.

Dunno.

although I am not sure(95% I'm probably wrong), I think that at 15,000 posts you are able to set custom titles. It would seem to be in order with everything else.

Maybe it's 10,000 rather than 15,000 because I was able to change mine just now. And I didn't have over 15,000 before the purge, either.

Edit: Actually, strike that. Tribes has a custom title with 7,000-odd posts.
Edit2: Bah, no he doesn't. Everyone in that range has the same one.

I'm saying that 8k and up now all have the same name whereas 10k and up had the same name under Jolt. They dropped one name (9k), and I was just pointing it out. Also it made it more confusing because it seemed for a while that anyone deemed "needs to get out more" would be able to change their title. It's now clear that this is not the case.

I was referring exactly to the fact that you say that there are people here whom you know would consider a poster title with the word "demon" in it "blasphemous, inappropriate, offensive".

Because I really, really doubt that. I certainly haven't seen it yet in my time here. Just in case: No, trolls don't count.

Instead it feels a lot like you are indeed deciding what constitutes offense by saying people are going to be offended when you're the only one so far who even brought up the issue.
