Also, I wonder if the presence of ads linking to pr0n and/or illegal online gambling will get this site blacklisted on public computers.

We've been asked to track any such inappropriate ads and bring them to the attention of Jolt. They're using a new service provider, and my understanding of the arrangement is that we're using COPPA (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/coppa.shtm) compliance and the UK's BBFC 12A (http://www.bbfc.co.uk/classification/c_12.php) standard for both ads and forum participation. This is fairly similar to the MPAA PG 13 (http://www.mpaa.org/FlmRat_Ratings.asp) rules for movie rating that NS mods have been using for some time.

So, if you spot an ad that doesn't appear appropriate, make a note of it here. If you're willing, click the link and post the target URL. We'll bring it to the attention of the Jolt Admins (who are much more approachable* now under the OMAC model).




* No, that approachability doesn't mean that we have enough influence to ask them to abandon their revenue model and remove the ads, so don't ask.

Are you sure you didn't pick it up at another site?
You might want to try Spybot Search and Destroy to get rid of stuff like that.

No, it isn't. I saw that one while I briefly had adblock disabled. I didn't find out it was porn, though, unfortunately. Anyway, send a message to Jolt about it, switch to firefox, and use adblock.

There was a "You have a message' link visible when I logged in here this morning, too: I thought that this might be a new 'feature' of the game, to let people who come to the forums directly know that their nations have TGs (which I think would be a nice idea...), so I clicked on it. In this case the link led to an online Poker-playing site...

this is what we're paying for NOT having "net neutrality" the televisionising of the internet by corporate media. yes it's obviously a marketing gimik, otherwise known as spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam.

as userloads increase and resaulting bandwidth consumption has to be paid for somehow, we can expect to keep seeing more of this kind of abuse, unless and until we stop expecting market forces to do everything that needs to be done.

i could care less that it sometimes points to porn, compared to war and a few other things, porn is pretty cool. what i DO find offencive is that this kind of come on crap is/'has to be', there at all, NO MATTER WHAT PROMO OF THE WEEK ITS SELLING!

Ok, I get that Jolt got bought out. And I also understand that the new owners for some reason think that a bunch of gamers and whateverthehell Generalites are want to see generic banner ads instead Jolt's original gamer reviews or game ads, but do we have to have the bloody things in the middle of a thread?

It's really distracting AND makes it hard to load the forum on one of my computers.

Any hope on getting a reversal?

You still end up with a large blank space in the middle of the thread though.It leaves a small white line here, though.

Why not switch to Opera instead? Lighter, faster and no need to fiddle with plugins (unless you absolutely want to ;)).

One of the (many) Firefox adblocking addons has the ability to block the entire frame between post 1 and 2, resulting in a gray line saying "sponsored links", and about 5 pixels of white space below.

I do, but I don't use firefox nor do I have (at least I haven't told Pandora to put it on) an adblock on my browser, yet I just get a large area of white.

What I want to know is why have they gotten rid of the ads on the top of the page? They could make more money if it was both.

I've been around for two or three years. I don't moderate, though, so my visibility is pretty low. I really only post in Technical and not necessarily very often at that. I mainly fix bugs.
