Nationstates/Jolt friend requests?

I just noticed that I had one. I had been previously unaware of the existence of such. I accepted, of course, but I'm a bit befuddled.
When did they start or has jolt always had them? And what do they do, exactly?

They're definitely new. And they're weird. <<
There's "social groups", too. And you can have conversations on your User CP page and see who looked at your page and other strange things...
And when you want to un-befriend someone it totally guilt-trips you.

I noticed some of these in the vBulletin 3.7.x new features. I suspect Jolt left them enabled by default, but will remove the ones that don't make a lot of sense as they get more data.

Erm, yeah, was that me? Sorry for that. It said I had no one on my buddylist, which I only use to keep track of the cool people from the lame people, so I readded everyone and then things went wonky.

Damn, and the only person to add me did it by accident. That makes me feel just greeeaaaaat.
