Truth is, fun as its been over the years, I don't think the ads are right for the sort of ppl we get here. Sure, Max needs to make some money, but the sort of ads I'm seeing are the "in your face" stuff.

That seems like a rather stupid reason to leave. No offense.

I... don't remember ever noticing an ad on NS. I don't know whose face they're in, but it's not mine.

I mean, has it not occured to Daft Viagria that the forums have been like this since we moved here [FOR FREE!!!!] at Jolt's ridiclously kind offer and the most we get is a single, top right hand corner ad?

He's referring to the ads visible on the nation pages of the game, not the forums. I had to open the site in IE, as AdBlock on Firefox didn't show them at all.

I'm not 100% certain that Max is responsible for those ads. It may have something to do with our hosting arrangement for the game on our new hosting site. We'll look into it.

Huh. I was totally unaware, for the same reason as Fris.

We ran for 5 1/2 years on a purely volunteer basis, with no ads and fixes/improvements coming very slowly. Which was fine, great, even, but the world was leaving us behind. I don't want NS to fade away; I think we have a lot of potential left. And I want to see NS2! Personally I prefer ads to pay-to-play.

Maybe it would be a good idea if you offered players the ability to donate one time a set amount of money so that the ad is removed on the nation page. Because its annoying. And I think a lot of people would pay it, especially if its not too much cash.

Ad's are preferable, in my opinion, because donations are not a guaranteed income. I don't see ads anyways because I use Firefox 3 with AdBlock Plus.

Those little things? Leaving over those? Gee, thats an awefully small thing to be leaving over and they don't seem to be overly large or offensively 'in your face' but I suppose each person will see them differently.

But I'm also willing to donate to tha cause. I can't afford much but a small amount monthly adds up over time.

Maybe you get different ads to me. I'm talking about the stuff I've had in the last 48 hours. It creapt in on the left bottom a few months back, now we get it at the top left, ..today the top right. Its not the ad, it's the content, and it's not jolt, it's NS.
As I said before, the guys need to make a living, but to push loans on kids is to my mind not a good idea.
**Dateing Arabs** Errr, I don't do dateing sites and I'm sure dating Arabs is no worse than dating any other race...... but NS has strict rules on what you can and cannot do. They have age limits to join the site and I'm sure Max would not agee to seeing the sorts of ads I have seen in the last month or so.
So Max, If you're online at the moment, do you agree with the ads my daughter is being subjected to????????

I'm not having a go at Jolt as much as the sort of thing kids get to view. I don't know how you guys host it. You're on the ball though:fluffle:
I accept ads, and have max security filters set up on my computer to take out porn and the like, but some of this stuff is a bit close to the mark.

TBH, looking at it here, I dont get the same spam. It's just an ad for a game in the top right.

That's not the reason you gave - you said, "because it's annoying".

Frankly speaking, I have enough trouble supporting myself, let alone the websites I visit. As the ads don't bother me (I don't even use AdBlock, so I can still see them) and I think the advertising revenue model is a good one for a high-volume website like NS, it's a non-issue for me. That and the fact that I visit this place (and every other website on the internet) about as frequently as I see my grandmother...

Your thread was originally posted in the RP forum. If you wanted to reach the greatest number of players, you'd have posted it in General, not NationStates. However, Mavenu's response was correct.

Also, if you're under the impression that Max will get fabulously rich from running a banner ad on the site, you're rather sadly mistaken. At best, he's likely to slightly reduce the amount of money it takes to host this FREE web game that you've had the opportunity to play for the past 5 1/2 years.

If that makes you want to leave ... don't let the door hit ya where the Good Lord split ya. Good riddance.

Since we have no control over this, and since the primary admin has already explained the reasons for the ads, and since the whole thing is rather silly in the first place... I'm gonna go out on a limb and call this done.

If you see an age-inappropriate ad, do please report it. I would be very surprised if there was something running here that's adults-only, but it's early days, so please let us know of any problems.
