Avatars

I'm not sure if this is in the right forum, but...

Why do some people have avatars and others don't? I've noticed the moderators have avatars, but I've seen a few people who weren't mods who had avatars in the forum. Could anyone clear this up for me?

I think if you're willing to pay, Jolt will let you have an avatar. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong. /notamod)

Not sure that you're wrong, but it would at least appear that the on/off switch for avatars is a global variable except for mods (assuming, of course, that Jolt goes by this (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/faq.php?faq=vb_user_maintain#faq_vb_avatar_how) at all)

@CM: Do you know if the people in question are ex-mods?

They're reserved for Mods and Admins so it is easier to tell them apart from regular members, or so I believe.

If you mean retired mods -- ones who've stepped back from active modding -- the avatar tells players that this is a person who knows the game and the rules backwards and posters should definitely take their advice. Or else.

I believe a couple of the other senior mods prefer to do their work unseen ... just hope you're not rhe reason they pull off the mask.

I don't know of anyone who has an avatar who isn't a mod or admin. If you do, please notify the admins through the Getting Help page.

Plenty of Jolt posters have them, as they've paid for them. The only avatar'd people on our forums should be NS staff, Jolt staff, and... possibly... the NS2 guys, but I don't know for sure.

Basically the mods are just vain. Hack has an odd need to stare at his silly moustache every time he posts, and Ardy just loves that oversized blue hat. ;)

On the NationStates forums.

Nyah. Of course. Other forums are unworthy of Our benevolent gaze.

As for my hat, SB, I dips me lid to none. (Except, now and then, Herself.)

Bah...can't even see avatars...or past page 3 ;)

EDIT: Fixed. Silly Jolt default settings.
