UN Report: Public Transport

Undivulged Principles
20-02-2008, 15:24
I have to wonder why all the top nations in the Public Transport Report have defunct economies. The logistical importance of Public Transport in relation to economic performance cannot be understated, and it seems rather ludicrous that nations with terrible economies have better transportation systems than nations with enormous economies.

To even build such a system would require enormous funds, which most defunct economies would be hard pressed to acquire, not to mention the cost of maintaining it. I believe you have to go past 100 to find an economically powerful nation on the list (you can acquire a Frightening rating by sheer size). Seems one of the odd aberrations of the game and perhaps some technical change might be in store to bring this sort of discrepancy in balance with reality.

I mean is there even any economic or military benefit of having such a system in the game?

Maybe they went broke paying for the Public Transport. :p

I seem to recall a similar problem with the Public Healthcare ranking...

Prehaps NS isn't really meant to be a realistic game, and instead was supposed to be nothing more than satire (people with awesome public transportation also have not so awesome economies due to PT being expensive)?

Just a hunch, you know.

I suspect that the issues that improve your public transport system also increase tax, thereby harming your economy. The simulations in NationStates are fairly basic.

Furthermore, remember you have fallen among RPers. Thus, nations with thoroughly defunct economies (such as mine) can simply claim that the UN gnomes who prepare these reports are unable to take into account the creative economic system that operates in our particular nation.

These range from feasible to total godmode -- we've got a thriving black-market that the gnomes can't rate; we're a society, not just an economy; why don't you rate our economy on the basis of citizen satisfaction ; you haven't allowed for the economic impact of magic -- and we get away with it if our fellow players let us.

(Looking at the crazy things that occasionally cause RL stock markets to rise and fall, I sometimes suspect that NS is actually quite realistic.)

*strikes noble pose, hand to unlined brow*

Poor, perhaps, in the way the world measures possessions; but rich, rich in meaningful spiritual and social development spurred by the enlightened interaction of equals and uplifting intellectual interchanges...

We make good whiskey, too.

Yup. Buncha filthy hippies.
A midnight dip in the Vastiva Memorial Reflecting Pool may be indicated.
Well, that's redeeming.
"Redemption" is one of those slippery religio-philosophical concepts best discussed at length ... I happen to have an open tab at the Strangers' Bar ...

That wretched hive of scum and villainy...?

You must be thinking of the General Assembly.

The Strangers' Bar is noted as a place where Wit and Wisdom, Beauty and Art entwine in the graceful and intricate measures of International Peace and Brotherhood.

Somewhat like the ModCave ...
