Rankings

Would it be possible to make the rankings system more easily viewable? For example, I can currently see that I'm ranked nth largest nation in the world. There are other criteria I've seen, like most socially progressive, and presumably others I haven't, due to the type of nation I play. Currently when we look at the world page, we see just the top 10 largest nations and then our place. Would it be possible to create a drop down menu where we can select the criteria we want to see (size, social progression, financial stability, whatever categories there already are), and view both the leaders and our current neighbours? So the top 10, and the 5 above and below us? It's just that NationStates seems to be such a fundamentally comparative game, and it would be nice to know how we're doing in all areas, especially since the data seems to be being recorded anyway.

Hope this is in the right area, I read through the FAQ and it seems to be, even if these forums are a bit empty...

The rankings are created daily and if I remember correctly, they are not stored on the server.

I'm rather sure that the next time that particular ranking comes up, your rank will be different than it was before.

I have no doubt that the rankings change, seeing as individual nations themselves can change twice a day. But if the data is not stored on the server, where is it stored? I don't mean to be obtuse, but I don't see how your post would be a barrier to a properly viewable and relevant display of different selectable rankings. Maybe it's cos it's 3:30 in the morning ;)

It's not that it's not stored on the server, it's that it's not stored period. You can't go back and see previous rankings because the data doesn't exist.

If by previous, you mean previous days, then there's no need to see that. My point is more that if there is a message saying "you are the nth largest nation" there'll presumably be other people with the message "you are the n-1th" or "n+1th", and rather than having that data viewable just to the individual, why not have it viewable to everybody without having to go through the nation list manually? That data at least must be being stored, or it could not be displayed. And surely there must be some numerical calculation for how far on any given chart (social progression or whatever) a country is, and I can't see how that data would be stored at all if not on the servers. If the data didn't exist, the rankings wouldn't exist. If the data does exist, it wouldn't be too difficult to display.

I would love to see something like this put in place - sure it would require time, patience and a bit of tech know-how to implement, but I feel it would help make this game more interesting than it already is.

Yes. But I'm rather sure that something like this will most likely not be added to NationStates. Maybe it will be added to NationStates 2 when that is released.
