Give Founder/Delegate the ability to ban on IP/nationName

Well, I would like to thank the moderators for their priceless job they're doing clearing out troll spam.

However.. I'm proposing a rewamp on the Regional Controls page, especially at the 'Eject/Ban nation' option. What I actually propose is for Founders/Delegates to get the possibility of banning nations with certain IP adresses from even entering the region (consequently, even nation names), much like forums have the possibility to wildcard ban ip adresses or usernames - you put the desired choices into a textarea each on a newline, or something like it.

I realise that this is not an easy task to code, but will do wonders for the delegates / founders of a region.

For example, I had an user on our forums trolling. I knew his IP, but could not restrict his access to the actual region (which he eventually joined and spammed)

An counter-argument for this is that the moderators will be stripped from their actual work, or that the founder / delegate can abuse this. (but then again, if they hold this seat, aren't they like superadmins of the respective region?)

A follow-up to this proposal is to get the possiblity for the delegate / admin to delete posts from the regional messageboard. Again, they can abuse this function, but right now they do not have enough options to protect against a troll, other than eject&ban the nation, and to report the action.

I realise that the above post is somewhat incohoerent, as it has been written in a rush, before going to sleep - but the ideas should make it through.

When a nation is ejected from a region, it is already put on a regional ban list. Although I don't think you can ban an IP Address as some people (like me) sign into NS from home and work.

A problem of IP banning is that it requires knowing the IP in the first place. I strongly suspect that kind of information - the IP of each nation - would have to be kept confidential: it couldn't be given out to players. (Not to mention that some nations might be used from different IPs - I've moved where I live three times in the time I've been playing NS.)

On RMB spam clearing, founders already can do this (to my knowledge): they simply post --founder clearing spam-- or similar until the message scrolls off.

You have to unban them later, though, don't you? Or is that a pre-Influence rule?

And I'd really dislike knowing IPs; already a member of one of the regions I'm in won't use the offsite forum because it would mean revealing an e-mail address. If the IP had been available to more than site Admins, they probably wouldn't have begun playing NationStates.

Only if your an invader do you have to unban them.

That's ALSO incorrect now. If an invader can work up enough influence to ban someone, they don't have to unban them.

Bah

I'm not used to this regional influence stuff.....:headbang:

This will not happen. Ever.

Some people are under the impression that IP addresses are fixed, one to a customer, and never change. Banning that user is as easy as waving a magic wand, and you never have to deal with them again. If it were that easy, we wouldn't need the "Delete-on-Sight" category for problem players that even we can't IP ban.

There are lots of technical details to be considered, and quite a number of human details as well. I'm not going to give you any more information of how and why this is impossible, but suffice to say, it won't happen.
