Long story short, I thought my nation got locked out (actually, I just misspelled the name) and I created another nation. The faq says only one nation in the UN; am I in trouble if I never use this one again?

Just wondering; if we can't, how do I close this one?

You can have multiple nations as long as only one is in the UN. If you accidentally joined the UN with two nations, go to the UN page and resign one of them.

If you don't want your second nation, just stop logging in. It will go away in 28 days.
