I'm getting a DNS error when trying to access www.nationstates.net
The following error was encountered:
Unable to determine IP address from host name for www.nationstates.net
Is something afoot?

Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at www.nationstates.net.
* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com

I think everyone is experiencing it at the moment. Presumably the site (or a DNS server) is down.

I don't have it myself - the site seems to function normally for me.
However, I do suspect that it effected the telegrams - for example, Azazia, another role-player on the boards, replied to one of my telegrams in due course ASAP. However, today, when I checked my Dossier, it said that he was active 4 hours ago....yet I received no telegram.
Hmm....

I have the problem as well, maybe there is a regional DNS problem.
I am acessing the Internet from Germany.
Maybe the other posters can narrow it down or widen the area where the problem occurs.
For me, it just freezes. I don't get an error message, but I don't get the site either.
Edit: And I'm in the USA

We're aware of the problem, but it takes an admin to bounce the game (assuming that's the problem). We're trying to reach them now.
If it's a wider DNS issue, it's out of our control. When somebody fixes it, it'l be fixed.

This has nothing to do with geography. The DNS server in question is down. Whether you're in London or Los Angeles will have no difference.

The scripts are calling for more scripts and code at nationstates.net, you need to put nationstates into your host file, with the proper address. In other words you need to resolve the address locally.
Or if your a windows user, just wait until the internet isn't broken.

Please don't attempt to update your HOSTS file if you don't know what you're doing, folks. We've got enough on our plates without being blamed for breaking your computers.

With Windows I wouldn't even know where to begin either.
But this does bring up an interesting issue, why are all the links on nationstates absolute? If they were relative it woudl be a lot easier to live with problems like this.

First you break the internet, now your going for their computers.;)

Here is how to edit your hosts file in Windows XP. I am not a Nationstates representative or mod or admin, so don't blame any problems on the people who run NS. You make this change at your own risk. Be sure to back up the file before you change anything.
Open c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in Notepad
Paste this line at the bottom of the file:
213.208.119.243 www.nationstates.net
Save. You should be able to load NS immediately.
Once the DNS servers come back up, you should remove this entry from the hosts file.
You make this change at your own risk. Be sure to back up the file before you change anything.
Now you went and did it.
Nataniel broke the internet.:p

I thoroughly enjoyed hacking one line into my hosts file. Thank you for that. It made me feel... hacky.
ANYWAY, I did that, and when I run the IP, the page that loads only has the nationstates banner (where it should be); the rest of the page is blank, and Opera (my browser) has finished loading. What now?

First take a little yellow sticky note and write "Remove hacky line from hosts file", and place on your monitor for Monday. Then...
This should have worked, but as with any problem I would try rebooting windows (I understand from reading posts previously that the hosts file may not be read dynamically but only at startup).
Next I would verify that the problem still exists, and that it occurs in more than just opera.
Good luck.

I do A-levels.
I like hacking because it's hacking (how can you not like it?); beyond that I also do computing for an A-level.
And my computer has way too many things on it. Restarting could take 20mins. Seriously.
It's not worthwhile for me to try that. Part of the reason I want on is to continue an ongoing discussion from yesterday, and I doubt the other participants want to hack their hosts file.

Just wait till the DNS server either resets itself after midnight or it fixes itself.
This shouldn't have been a DNS problem. There are thousands of the things spread all over the world, replicating in about 24 hours. If it is a DNS thing, then someone's been doing some poisoning (always possible) but using your HOSTS file to resolve the address locally should pull the site up with no problems. That's all a DNS server does, after all - resolve the address typed into the IP address.
Looks more to me like it was a server problem.

Looks more to me like it was a server problem. It was a DNS problem. When I edited the HOSTS file, I was immediately able to access the site. The server was unaffected, and blazingly fast because there were only 16 people online
Anyways, whoever did the hosts file hack should take it out now, because the DNS is working again.

You're both right. It was a DNS server problem. The config file on the primary DNS server wiped itself somehow, and they had to find and restore from backup. It took out virtually all the Jolt-hosted domains (including the ones that they get paid to run!) so they got it back as fast as they could.
It's back now, and you can satisfy your addiction. Be happy.

You're both right. It was a DNS server problem. He was talking about the game server itself, not the DNS server. I was referring to the DNS server. But it's back up now so we can all go have fun :)
