This may be a stupid question, but how do you hyperlink on this site? I only get it to display the link itself.

It's not HTML, it's vB code. Simplified stuff for use in forums, y'know.
If you don't want to be bothered with coding stuff, click on the User CP link in the upper right. Select Edit Options, scroll down, and choose the Standard Editor - Extra Formatting Controls. All those little buttons above the text box will do fun formatting things.
