Suggestion for Telegrams

What's really annoying about telegrams is that every time you log in it says "You have X new telegrams!"... but the thing is, I've already read them, I just don't want to delete them, but store them incase I need them later.
So I'm asking, on the Telegrams page, can we please have a "Mark as read" button (you are already able to mark them in the check boxes), so the message dosn't come up on main page saying we have new telegrams when I don't, as I've already read them.

I dunno about this. I like having an immediate tally of how many telegrams total are in my inbox so I make sure I have enough room left.

I'd think it would actually be a very good feature.
I think it would be a useful feature as well, but we have to ask ourselves: is it worth the large effort that the mods have to go to to change the coding of the game?

It really isn't that hard to code.
I know the creators of NS have other jobs and all... but other online multiplayer games have a lot more features than NS. This is already a fault in the game anyway..
And HotRodia, if you want that, then there should probably be a total number of telegrams number at the top of the page?

How do you know what's easy to implement and what isn't?

Many other online games are staffed by paid professionals, not unpaid volunteers, not all of whom have extensive coding experience. Give them a break.
And all you really have to do is remember how many telegrams you have and see if it increased.

I dont know how to reply but that sounds like an awesome idea! Maybe we could have folders to put them in!

Hmm, I know a man that runs a far more technical game than this on his own, and it isn't his real job either.
Theres no need to say "give them a break" - all I was asking for was for a "mark as read" button, not really that hard is it? I did add a little merit to them doing this in their free time. And no I won't give them a break, I'm the consumer and I'll say what I want.
I'm just saying that they should include this in their next update, thats all.

We have faith that the admins know something about modular software development. :-)

You should have faith that the game was written by a novelist who had never before used perl. While the admins have the ability to rewrite the game completely, we also have better things to do.

You pay them.....how much?
(And why is it only the UN regulars and Pythag opposing this idea?)

It's not.
Pyth knows of what he speaks, and thus it's not necessary for the rest of the mod squad to pipe in with negation about this oft-raised, oft-denied feature. One assumes that also applies to longtime players and Tech regulars.

Count me in as opposing the idea (not that my opinion matters). It would be a nice feature, but I know what a pain it is working with code written by amatuers (and sometimes written by professionals too), and this game has enough glitches as it is.

It's strange, but I've been here for...a while...and I check Tech regularly but I've not seen this one mentioned before. Or more accurately, I don't remember it being mentioned before. I could just be forgetting.

It has been, even while I've been around. And I don't so much object to the feature as the attitude. This is way down on my list of priorities, though, and I don't see that the potential benefit is worth the potential loss from screwing with a not-as-trivial-as-you-might-think system that a lot of people rely on.

If people want to store old telegrams separately from unread ones, what's wrong with copying the ones that have been read into Word documents [outside of NS] and then saving those in the normal way?

An excellent idea, and on that shows the true spirit of nationstates (in my mind).
Nationstates is more than just the sum of its code, the coded section of the game provide the basic framework of what nationstates is. Most of the real game takes place between players, in telegrams or in off-site forums.
Thusly, if you want some feature, don't wait for the admin to code for it (they have better things to do), just figure out a way to make it happen outside of the game.
