What's with the Popups Lately?

It seems to me that this is a recent thing. Adverts that try to take more space on the web browser than they are allocated on the page, pop up web pages and delayed pop ups that seem to avoud even the pop up blockers?

Bam, it just happened while I am in the middle of typing this post!

I don't want to know aboout vitamins, and I don't want to fry three ants to get a free IPOD. I just want to post in peace!

But, don't you want to win the "hourly prize"?

I've not seen any popups on either the forums or the game site. I've used Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera. Sounds to me like the problem is on your side.

You're describing a common problem often associated with viruses, spyway, and mal-ware. I'd recommend a good sweep of your system. Other players may have specific recommendations, or you could simply google for more info.

Yes, sounds like you've got some spyware. Try running Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy.

Does anybody else really hate these ads they are using everywhere recently, the flash ones that open over the content until you have to close them? I really hate those.

I agree with frisbee, nationstates has no Ads :) you have the joys of spyware.

If I do then (1) it has infected two different computers with two different operating systems and virus protection software and (2) it somehow only seems to send these popus when I am browing the jolt forums. That is possible, but somewhat unlikely.

It seems many people are having similar problems(including myself), it's very likely someone is fucking with the site. Though without admin confirmation, I can't conclude this.

Nope. It's most likely spyware in the user's computer. I haven't had any ads pop up myself.

Uh, I think it's a little quick to speculate on that sort of thing. I agree the new ads are annoying, and I noticed Tzorsland's thread, but still kinda early to jump to that conclusion based on, what, 2 complaints?

No, you can't. I, however, can.

Moderator posts may be considered definitive on almost any subject related to the site, as we do have daily contact with the admins. Many of us are also quite technical (I work as a senior IT specialist), so it's not like we're babbling about stuff we don't know about.

The two cases I've seen reported very different symptoms, and match what I've seen recently in IT security bulletins at work about several current exploits. Two cases do not a problem make, given the volume of visitors to the site. I'd expect dozens of reports a day, as is usually the case when we get a site-wide problem.

I'll add Spyware Blaster to that list, and if you are REALLY having troubles, try the trial of CounterSpy by Sunbelt Software.

I haven't had any "popup" ads, but I did see an annoying ad asking me to click on a button to get an "hourly prize". I only started seeing it yesterday, and only on Jolt, and it was positioned where the ads for Jolt's games usually go.

I've had this issue. Seems that one of these pop-ups is sending me to a site where a trojan is placed into my Temporary Internet Pages file. We deleted the file containing the trojan, uncertain where I had gotten it. Then I got it again after having only gone to this site. Evidence suggests that it's coming from whatever popups/screwing-with-this-website is occurring on this site. (It has been deleted - again). I'd appreciate it if this was dealt with. Quickly. So that I stop having two trojan attacks in the same day.

I've still yet to see any popups or have any problems like this....

You might also try the free trial of Ewido (Just bought by Grisoft): http://www.ewido.net/en/

I would also recommend Panda Software's (http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm) scan. They are the guys that I trust.

If you're using an ISP like NetZero (at least my experience with their free version), expect popups. Although I use Opera as my main broweser, I've used Firefox and still, time from time, out of necessity, use IE, and I've never had a problem with popups. However, a scan would also be good.

I AM using IE. And I did a scan both times. My anti-virus software is actually very good so I don't need any new stuff, people - it's what found the thing in the first place!

And I'd appreciate it if someone official for NationStates could at least acknowledge that they've heard my problem and are looking into it - please?

I've heard your problem. You're using IE. Don't complain about spyware until this issue is resolved.

I can't recall (I'll confirm tomorrow), but I believe my google popup blocker's been ringing them in on Jolt lately (@ work). It seems to just be the free ipod stuff. I know for sure it hasn't been happening on invisionfree and the rest of the sites I already knew had popups attached to them so I don't think it's spyware, but I don't know.

Now, if you want to here corporate WTFs, we aren't allowed to have our computers online if we've confirmed spyware on our machine, but we aren't allowed to use spyblaster, spybot or adaware (or, technically, HijackThis but I use it anyways since it's much easier to hide.....on a flash drive....), so we've got to reimage any machines confirmed with spyware.

Anyways

Firefox, here, hasn't had any problems. Regardless, doesn't Jolt deal with ads? In that case, why is it being brought up to the NS crew?

I also am having this problem: it just started tonight. Repeated pop-ups, etc. My pop-up blocker only catches some of them, but it does not occur when I am on any other site.

Those do not relate to the trojan problem that I stated. In fact, both of those were prior to my post.

O.K. I've had enough of this thread. If you still have problems:

1. Never, ever use IE.
2. Get a pop-up blocker that also blocks flash.
3. Do a thorough cleaning of your system.
4. Complain to Jolt.
