The Flag Faq says we need to use JPG for our flags. I've heard of some getting by with small GIFs and the like, but I was curious if it were possible to better allow other formats such as PNG. I find that JPG tends to ruin the color schemes of my flags.

I have managed to upload a .PNG file before, and I think you can upload .GIF files too.

jpg png and gif all work last time I checked... I think there might be some other formats that work too. There is still the size (of the file, not x/y size) limitation for all formats. You can make the actual x/y size whatever you like.

NationStates only checks the size of the file. Most browsers will display images that claim to be one format but turn out to be another, so you should find that JPEG, GIF and PNG have almost universal support.

Technically, it's possible to make quite massive flags. From a moderation perspective, we'd prefer you use a maximum size of perhaps 300 x 200. Larger than that, and text starts getting squashed on normal-sized browsers. We do and will continue to delete flags that are overly large, so do keep that in mind.

We recommend: JPG, GIF, or PNG. Any other flag is unlikely to work cross browser and carries the risk of being deleted (not in punishment, but simply because I may not recognize the file format).
