Problems with cookies

Every time I try to log in from home I get this message:

"Your browser is refusing to accept cookies

You have tried to log in a nation, but your browser did not send us a cookie. NationStates uses cookies to manage logins, and will not work if they are disabled.

If you have configured your browser to refuse cookies from NationStates, please change this. Alternately, you may be accessing NationStates from a location that denies all cookies -- for example, a slightly paranoid work organization."

I have tried using cooker manager with "unblock this site", but it doesn't work. It has been like this for months. I can log in from other computers, but not my home one. Perhaps someone could give me a hand?

...or is this another mod conspiracy against me? ;)

Look through ALL your computers settings. Make sure that there isn't any other programs (like firewalls) that may be blocking NS.

What interface are you using? I may be able to help further if you specify that.

I'm not very computer literate, so I could do with a hand, cheers.

I use Windows 98. If you know how I could fix this I'll........

Okay, firstly try clicking on TOOLS (on the top bar) and then onto privacy. Select the lowest possible privacy setting (this is only temporary). Now, try logging on, and see what happens.

If the same happens, tell me and I'll give you the next step.

Do you have any Firewall or Internet security software installed?

Yes, I have AVG 6.0 anti-virus system. If that is what you mean. No firewall.

Umm...

I dunno if this would block cookies. Try turning it off and logging on, see if it works.

If it doesn't, then I'm afraid I don't know (at the minute).

That would be great if you could post them here.

I still can't access my beautiful and wonderful Democratic People's Republic of Kimia.

Much appreciated, friends.

Okay. So, first, go to your start menu and then to wherever the majority of your files are ( I have a Mac so the locations of these files will be different for you). Look for a file dealing with all your cookies, for me its NSHTTPCookiestorage.html. There should be a subheading or section labled something like NSHTTPcookieAcceptPolicy. Make sure your accepting cookies. If not, then set your policy so that you are accepting them. I'm not totally confident since I'm working with a Mac but if you are accepting cookies then you shouldn't have problems logging in.

Try clearing all the cookies for nationstates.net. You might have a corrupt cookie that is preventing the creation of new cookies.

(there is actually no technical basis to this reply, but what the hey? It might work.)

That IS likely. I have had cookie problems before, and it was the source. It always seems to work.

No luck! I deleted all the cookies and in the end allowed all cookies as well! No luck. I think it must be something wrong with the computer itself somehow. Thanks for the tips.

Maybe ... One last shot, just in case this works.

Go to Tools, then Internet Options, then click on the Security tab. Go to Trusted Sites and move the slider all the way to the bottom, click on the Sites button, and add www.nationstates.net and forums.jolt.co.uk into the trusted sites section. Your browser shoudl then accept cookies.

Other than this I'm out of help. I don't know if you tried this already, because I don't think I saw a mention of it in the thread.
