Hdi

Hi.
I want to ask the game moderators whether we can have an HDI (Human Development Index) for our nations. It works like this:
The scale works from 0 to 10, 0 being the poorest and 10 being the richest. For example, the poorest country in the world has an HDI of 0.281, whereas the richest country has an HDI of more than 9

I don't think it will be implemented into the game, but it could be added to a economic calculator script.

How is this different to 'economy?'

I'd guess it would or could be affected by economy, crime rate and possibly civil rights. It's a nice idea but I don't think the XML feeds have got enough information for a calculator and I doubt it would be implemented into NS.

I tried to make one of these, but I couldn't really decide on a fair formula. The RL HDI uses life expectancy at birth, adult literacy rate, gross education enrollment rate, and GDP per capita at PPP, in a 3:2:1:3 ratio. I don't think there's enough in the XML formula to use those. So, if someone were to create a HDI calculator, it'd be an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how they would fairly reach a figure.

I have actually created a calculator which works out HDI (it's a slightly simplified formula, leaving out education enrollment). Mine was about 0.85 when I last checked, but my economy's improved since then.

Economy is the money of a country, HDI is how developed a country is.
It's influenced by industry - ie, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and Quaternary - services like health care and social security; daily caloric intake; and a load of other stuff as well.

The problem with this idea is that it would require a lot more information than NS gives to create an accurate HDI for a nation. Unless NS expands to give you statistics for life expectancy, quality of life, avalability of doctors, infrastructure, and all that stuff, it's just not possible to make an accurate HDI for nations, since it measures quality of lfie rather than economy or anything else.

I imagine an off-site calculator along the lines of NSEconomy or NSTracker could be made to measure HDI, but it would have to basically make up all the above statistics that contribute to the HDI. NSEconomy and NSTracker use things like your economy, your population, and your primary industry to make the judgments they do, which are all provided by the game and therefore cemented into place, pretty much. An HDI calculator would tell you "You have .5 doctors per 1000 people, and only one hospital in your entire nation," and there would be a lot of grief over people thinking that must be inaccurate.

It is a neat idea for an off-site calculator, it would just take a lot of work to implement.

As in real life, a HDI of 1 means a highly-developed nation (with 100% literacy, 85 years life expectancy and $40,000 per capita real GDP) and 0 means a subsistence economy.

Just wondering how you made that. I'd be interested to find out what mine is. Is that a calculator you have, or did you just work that out on your own?

No nation can realistically have a literacy rate of 100%, so the theoretical max HDI would be something in the .998 range. Of course, things could be different in NationStates...

It's a calculator I made (it's an old version I may update soon).
