Problems with AOL

It has been understood that AOL has being causing serious problems. Some of these have been fixed, but AOL is still a massive problem. Here are some of these problems.

E-Mail Blocks nationstates.net causing you to miss verification e-mails, UN e-mails, new password e-mails, you name it. Don't check the spam folder, it's blocked before it gets to you. White list nationstates.net and hope that works.

IP problems. Imagine this. Some person down the road forgets his puppet's password, and it's effecting you. Precisely what will happen with AOL. They will put several people onto one IP address. If someone on your 'Virtual IP' forgets his password, when you try to log in, you will have to wait 45 more miniutes. Forum still will work.

You need to add: anyone who's been on the internet for more than a few years sees '@aol.com' and thinks you're an idiot. Just kidding. :-)

I think we can all agree that a service that installs WildTangent and Viewpoint Media Player without your consent is probably evil.

I have AOL. For stuff like this though, I use either a gmail or yahoo address, both of which are free. I once got the IP thing and it annoyed me because it was the only time that day I could check and I did it right before I was going to sleep, and it tells me wait 45 minutes. I missed the issue that day, and had to do 2 the next.

Has NS admin ever emailed AOL to plead non-spamness? I doubt it would work, but this does seem to be quite a problem.

AOL does in fact have a Whitelist program that we could apply for, but it requires (among other things) a guarantee of 100+ AOL users per month that have been inconvenienced by their blocks. Our complaints average around 5-7 per week. Had we been an aggressive spammer, we could probably be whitelisted with ease. As it is, bubkis.

As for the rest of their application for whitelisting, this is Step # 84a:

So friends and neighbors, if you have been inconvenienced by AOL's refusal to let our emails through, E-MAIL THEM and tell them.

Hey, I'm only doing this because NS is a free game. (There's no such thing as a free online game) This is just a guide to what to do.

Use this. It's a good free e-mail (http://gmail.google.com)

As in, you have to do something. Mostly find how to avoid those ads for books. So NS is a (kind of) free game.

Just because you don't like looking at a pair of unobtrusive ads doesn't mean it's somehow "not free". Furthermore, claiming that you have to "do something" is inane.

It wouldn't be much of a game if you didn't do anything, now would it? Even Progress Quest requires you to run a program.
