Issues Mishandled

I've only been a member of NationStates for 1 week, and already been presented with the issue of "Should Democracy be Compulsory" twice!

On both occasions, I opted to make voting an optional activity for my virtual citizens. However, after I had legislated the second time, my country profile stated that voting was COMPULSORY in the nation of GeoMagna! Worse still, it now calls me a "mostly benevolent dictator"!! This surely implies that my citizens do not have any voting rights at all..? The last thing I want is a dictatorship.

One other matter... my national animal is the sea serpent, and apparently it now "frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests"? Sea creatures don't live in forests (duh!) Unless you count kelp beds I suppose... :p Is there no provision for marine animals in the NationStates report template?

Can someone please explain these anomalies?

Not having access to the source code, I can merely guess:

Possibly, the dictatorship thing was affected by other issues.

And as for the sea horse thing, remember this: it's a free game, with most of the coding done by one person. Naturally, flaws like this will emerge. If there was a whole team and you had to pay money, I suppose this would have been fixed.

The whole thing has annoying flaws like that. Live with it.

Hey, sorry to bother anyone... but I have a problem I'm wondering about...

I have 2 nations, and on one nation, I recieved the issue on whether I should make nudity legal or not. I chose the option that says it should be legal, and the next day, my civil rights increased. I recieved the same issue on my second nation and I replied the same response, but it didn't affect my civil rights at all. I know I didn't chose the wrong option by accident because my nation was updated to say that "people are often seen going to work starked naked."

I don't know, but it seems like my economy and civil rights aren't moving at all even though I select options to issues I would think will have some kind of impact... such as that Immigration issue.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer...

It might be that it DID improve your civil rights, but not by a whole category. Example:
80-85 = good
85-90 = very good

If you went from 80 to 85, you still wouldn't see a change. This is all conjecture, because I don't know the code: but nor do you. As such, it can be hard to guess the precise effects of issues.

I don't know, but it seems like my economy and civil rights aren't moving at all even though I select options to issues I would think will have some kind of impact... such as that Immigration issue.

I can only suggest you be patient. Perhaps over time you will start to see changes.

don't forget that other issues or former ones still make a difference, and like he said, one issue might not push you over, it might take 2 or more

So, on the strength of various decisions I have made, I can still be classed as a dictatorship even if I do protect the right to vote?

Yes. And you can be classified as various other contradictory things too.

I'm having a similar problem - I've been on NS a few months and over the past 10 days or so I've had the issue about taxing churches 3 times - and I'd had the issue a couple times before that. I realise it's a free game and I'm not complaining, just very curious :)
