Regional issues?

Why not? Every now and then, everyone in your region gets the same issue, like a plauge of locusts or a natural disaster? Even more of a nightmare for the programmers, howsaboot having knock-off issues. For example:

There are 10 nations in a region. They get a regional issue warning of an approaching hurricane. Call it Hurricane Jimbo.

5 choose to set up evacuations, storm barriers et cetera, rendering them safer. A random generator states that one gets hit. The other 5 decide that the chance of being caught are low, thus they do nothing. Let's assume that the random generator decrees that 3 get hit, the other 2 are fine.

So we have 4 nations hit by Jimbo and 6 are fine.

Next, there are issues dealing with the clean-up operation. The 6 lucky nations get issues about lending support and the 4 badly damaged nations get issues about restoring order and rebuilding the country. Et cetera.

So, good idea? Or should I not have wasted my time?

It doesn't seem likely, as the random generator might not recognize the stats... it requires a lot of coding...

Interesting idea. I could see how it might be workable for one region, but I have no idea whether it'd be feasible for all regions.

I'm not sure why this has to be tied to a region, since in the feeders or large regions, that would lead to huge numbers getting "hit" by the disaster.

One problem though is the way issue results come out, I think there's a standard set of effects for each issue and choice. Given your current stats, they might not come out exactly the same, but having them affect completely different areas seems unlikely. If I choose A and you choose A, can my health go up while yours goes down? And I'm close to positive there's only one text effect for each issue choice.

I think it could work if the "randomness" was tied to a completely unrelated stat. Let's say you choose option A, make your nation safer, but if your... transportation or something else is low , you get "hit". That would make a choice unpredictable in some sense. What might be really hard would be the second issue coming along in terms of the aftermath, since your decision *and* the randomness would have to be recorded instead of just your choice. And given what I've seen mods post, the game records the issue and choice number, nothing else.

I might have just confused myself with the above post :p

Sounds like a great idea for NS2.

Yeah, seconded. It would most likely be too difficult to code into this version, but the possibilities are very interesting.

What you forget is that the Regional Issue would not be a regular issue, and therefore is not tied to standard issue rules.

You could try emailing your idea to sirocco. He might be able to give more constructive feedback.

Sure that wouldn't be a waste of Moddy time?

He states in one thread that he's willing to receive emails about issue ideas. Although this is a technical change, not an issue idea, per se, it doesn't mean he'd object.

On reflection, I really should have stuck in the disclaimer that I'm not at all suggesting that he would welcome such an email, and that as such I'm not instructing you to spam a mod. But given that he offered help with issue ideas, and given that this is related to that, it doesn't seem so unreasonable. It's up to you to use your discretion, I think.

Hmm...I'll think about it. If nothing happens on this thread, I might just do what you suggest.

If it was possible to tie it to the current issue structure though, wouldn't that be more likely to be implemented?

If this is ever going to happen, it'd happen in NS2. But only if NS2 uses regions.

What are you suggesting? That NS2ers could be stuck in the Pacifics?

EDIT: Yay, not instantly rejected!
