The Ultimate Newbie's Guide to NationStates

Ok, don’t know if this is the right place for this. I've seen a lot of very helpful guides, but newbies (and others) are still asking questions like these... so here goes....

--- The Ultimate Newbie’s Guide to NationStates ---

Ever had any questions you wanted answered about this game? This is the place to ask them.

So I’ve created a nation and everything, but how do I change how it works?
You answer the daily issues, and depending on how you answer them you can get a different government type (if you want to know what they are, check this thread. (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=392208)

Now that I'm here I want to introduce myself and get to know people. What is the proper way to do that?
In RP, post a thread with a title similar to "A New Nation is Formed" or something. In the General forum, you can post an OOC (out-of-character, or non-roleplay-related) message telling people about yourself, but I'm not all too sure if the mods will accept that (yeah Fris, I'm looking at you and your copycat rule;)). Otherwise, just start posting and be assured that people will notice you eventually. Just look at me, for example. [Hack says: Who the heck are you, Czardas? :P]

Ok, what are the rules of this site?
Frisbeeteria has compiled them all in The One-Stop Rules Shop (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=416023).

What is defending and invading? How do you do it?
Invading a region (or "region crashing") is moving in and attempting to seize the UN Delegate position. Defending regions is preventing this from occurring. There are many rules concerning this. For example, invading a region is allowed, but kicking everyone out of the region afterwards is not. To learn more, check http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Gameplay.

My region doesn't have an active founder or UN Delegate -- how can I gain control of it?
Either get elected as UN Delegate (if there are other nations in the region), or convince everyone to move out of it, and refound it after about 24 hours by moving back in.

I have a question and the FAQ doesn’t answer it. What do I do?
Check the stickies posted in every forum. If your question still hasn’t been answered, post it in one of these forums. A Game-related question belongs in Gameplay (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=1234); a technical question, by a strange coincidence, can be posted in Technical (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=1224); if you want to talk to the moderators, ask in Moderation. (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=1231)

It’s a democracy, so we can do whatever we like, right?
No, you can’t. Sorry. This site is owned by Max Barry, and you have to listen to what he (and the moderators, acting on his authority) says.

Who are the moderators and what do they do?
The Basenji has already answered that question, here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=438230).

What do all those confusing words mean? How do you “BUMP” something, and whatever does FT refer to? And what the heck is TIN…
Sirocco has created a NationStates Dictionary (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=7905647) that should answer those questions (well, ok, except for the last one… (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/The_Imperial_Navy):p)

I want to post more information on my nation! You know, like a factbook, and a history, and my national leader, and…
You can post your factbooks on this thread (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=358763), your national capital here (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=351543), your national leader here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=412266)… or just consolidate all that information and create an entry for your nation on NSWiki (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php).

Where do I calculate my stats?
The NSEconomy Calculator (http://nseconomy.thirdgeek.com/) is one. NSTracker (http://nstracker.retrogade.com/) is another one; they use the same data but with different advantages and disadvantages. The Sunset Calculator (http://www.sunsetrpg.com/economystatistics.php) uses different data; either of these is preferred.

I’m into fighting wars with other nations and role-playing. Where do I find out more about that?
This thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=437653) is a good place to start. It links to tons of old threads, which in turn link to older threads, etc. and should definitely be read, although I don’t seriously expect you to read it in its entirety.

I want to become a moderator but don’t want to ask for it, since it usually lessens your chances. What do I do?
Well, if you’re kind, patient, and helpful, and remain that way for a very long time while following the rules to a letter—and if, er, certain unmentionable things do not totally freak you out ;)—you may be eligible for modship when a new moderator is needed. The administrators may contact you and ask you if you would like to become a moderator. I’m not all too sure, never having been a mod myself. (Perhaps one of the aforesaid can edit this into the correct procedure.)

What is IRC and how do you use it?
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a method NSers use to chat, designed for group communication. One must download a server such as mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) to use it. For more information see the Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC) or NSWiki (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/IRC) articles on the subject.

What are the benefits of the UN?
If you join the UN you can vote on resolutions affecting the entire NS world. You can also be elected to the position of regional delegate, and exert power over your entire region. However, you are also affected by all resolutions that pass. You may only have one nation in the UN.

How do I declare war on somebody?
No, there isn’t any “Declare War” button next to someone’s nation name. No, your army isn’t really of a fixed size. To declare war, just post that you’re declaring war on another nation. If you don’t have a preference as to whom you’re fighting, you can either start a thread seeking enemies or post that an expansionist dictatorship has risen in your nation, or that your government is trying to quell a rebellion and seeks international aid… whatever you want.

How do I determine my military?
Generally, about 2% of your population is considered acceptable in peacetime. In wartime you can have from 4% to as much as 10%, although the latter will probably be difficult to manage, costly, and ill-trained. For more information, the consolidation sticky (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=437653) linked to above has several links that can help you with RPing armies.

Is $IMPROVEMENT going to be made?
Probably not. The moderators have determined that this version of NationStates is apparently final as concerns nonessential changes to the game. However, if it’s not a security or coding problem, you can post it in the NationStates 2 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=1228) forum.

Ok. What do you suggest I change?

Well, for starters, you should link Guffingford's list in 'Improvements' section. And, as CG points out, there's no Gameplay; nothing about invasion/defending and so on.

Also, given the number of stickies you list, would a 'for starters, RTFS' point not be in order, a little higher than the fourth point in? Surely they should be the first port of call, not the recourse if all else fails.

NSTracker isn't different to NSEconomy, in so far as it's based on the same ideas. Also, the preferential treatment seems unfair.

If you're going to keep the RP emphasis, then this seems MUCH less comprehensive than Euro's Guide To NationStates.

Given the sheer number of these points that are dealt with in the FAQ or in other stickies, I wonder of its value as a whole.

Just add a little more about general gameplay and it should be fine...

That does sound like a good idea, IMNSHO. However, I prefer having the links at the bottom. Not all too sure why.

I don't think there's much point in having a sticky that tells people to read the stickies. Other than that, this looks pretty cool.
Gruenberg
28-09-2005, 21:57
But, what is there in here that isn't accurately covered in the other consolidation stickies. I appreciate there's nothing actually called the Beginner's Guide To NS (or nothing good/obvious, at least), but there is the (much more comprehensive, well composed and helpful) Guide To Nationstates. If people read the stickies, they will largely not find this useful. If they don't, then it's unlikely they'll read this, I would have thought.

Everyone is encouraged to contribute links, suggestions, other FAQs, &c. Besides, Euro (who compiled the GtNS and 600 other stickies besides) has been here for a lot longer and thus, understandably knows a good deal more about the game and the kinds of questions people ask, etc.

Though one can see effort and thought has been put into this, I fail to see any new information. Mostly, these kinds of threads are a collection of already stickied threads, thus adding nothing of value. In the years since NS started in 2002, I think we got all aspects of the game covered.
Gruenberg
29-09-2005, 20:22
Well I'm not sure about that. But I do agree that there isn't anything that can't already be found in the various stickies.

Incidentally, have any of the mods yet ventured opinions on its utility?

I pretty much agree with Guffingford. I think Czardas could just compile links to all the stickies in one post and get the same effect.

Hell, Fris could just add a post listing all the stickies to the OSRS and we'd have a thread that tells you everything you ever wanted to know about NS and more.
Gruenberg
29-09-2005, 21:57
That would actually be a pretty good idea...but I doubt Fris would want to clutter the thread with non-rules, as this might lead to reports of RP violations or such like. But one compilation thread might be good. The II Sticky is already pretty good in that respect, though, and I don't really see much point in this thread.

That's a good point. Perhaps there could be a single thread that contained everything you needed to know, and it would be in two sections, the first called Rules & Regulation and the second called Ideas & Information.

I imagine the I&I posts would be structured like so:

Forum Name

Short summary of what goes in the forum, what doesn't, etc.

Sticky 1
Sticky 2
Sticky 3

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About NationStates and More

The NationStates Forum (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=1235) contains just about all information you will ever want to know about this enjoyable simulation game. It also contains great ideas and helpful suggestions for those looking to increase their efficacy and enjoyment in the game. These things are collected in what are called Stickies. Stickies are threads that contain necessary, important, useful and otherwise beneficial information. Several stickied threads can be found at the top of each sub-forum. Accordingly, I have structured this listing according to the organizational pattern of the forum. Below are links to each of the Stickies. Keep in mind that the individual stickied posts may contain further links to more important posts and that the amount of information contained in some of these posts is incredible, so you may have to focus on the areas that interest you in an effort to avoid spending the next five hours at your computer reading reference threads.

Mmm...but that's just a list of all the stickies. What about threads - such as NS IRC, or something about calculators - that might well deserve a separate mention?

No, to my mind, all people have to do to find everything in this is read the stickies. There's little point in a sticky compilation...and anything beyond that becomes unworkably big.

Ok...what did you do, find every single sticky and list them all?

Obvious answer: "yes".

Most of the threads I put down aren't necessarily Sticky threads. However, I'll add these in.

I realize a lot of work probably went into this, but I personally see no need for it. All of those links are either linked to in stickies, or are stickies. If someone wants to learn more about a specific forum, they'll read the stickies (hopefully). Putting all of this information within one post can easily overwhelm a newbie, and turn them off to NS, especially with all of those links you've put in.

I've had a thread in the works, that'll make things easier to swallow for someone just getting into the forums, but have neglected it as of late...

Ah, but it appears that most people don't read the Stickies, which is why we need a thread telling them to read the stickies... of course, if they don't read the thread they won't know... so yeah, it is ineffectual...

Btw, this was mostly a draft/idea for a series of threads I wanted to create, introducing the new members to different aspects of NS... Of course, it might have been a better idea to hand over the realization of that idea to "people who know better" like mods, but I needed to satisfy my ego. ;) Ok, thanks everyone for explaining just how much of a failure I am, it certainly makes me feel a whole lot better. :(

Czardas, a lot of people have thought of writing a sort of guide to bring all the stickies together and in the darkness bind them. But let's face the fact that Euro is the one best qualified to do that. Not me, not Gruenberg, not you. We each have our own niche in this game and make valuable contributions, and stickies seems to be Euro's niche. You may want to figure out what niche you fit in and work on doing that, or continue doing it if you already are.

This effort was certainly not a failure. You've brought up some threads that I didn't even know about, and it'll be a major help to me at creating this new thread.

Yeah, I really didn't intend to suggest that this thread wasn't valuable...just that the end guide might need to be different. I think Euro made a good point about too much information being scary - certainly, it took me a while to get through the Guide To NationStates - but equally we don't really want 10 stickies in each forum.

Yes, it seemed fairly obvious that Euro was the only one of us with enough time, dedication, and ability to compile his first sticky... and it got easier from there on. Practically no-one else has so much as a chance at making a good one.

I agree. Threads with too much information are long and hard to read. I've never been through more than the 1st post of the II Consolidation Sticky.

I don't know about that. The guide in General was pretty good, and you polished up PM's original version very nicely. I've written...three stickies I think (in the UN forum under my Texan Hotrodders account) and I too could do a "good" sticky. Whether it's "good" or not is not the issue, really. It's that Euro is more practiced at it and tends to make them better than just "good". :)

I've done far, far worse. My secret evil crimes against Max and the mods include failing to post in the UN forum ever and *gasp* offering a blow-by-blow negative criticism of Jennifer Government.

(Well it was hardly blow-by-blow.)

But the point about the II Consolidation Sticky is interesting. You've been here over six months and, as I understand it, have done (and are currently doing) RPing. If the length of the II Sticky (straight faces people) turns you off, then that's a potential sign that newer players definitely won't have patience.

That's true. I read the Guide to NationStates, AMF's Guide to War, and about 2-3 other threads, but the rest of the thread was really too much. Yet that was quite enough for me to become a fairly adequate RPer. At least, I've never been warned for godmoding or other heinous misdemeanors.
