Here's the best answers we have right now:

Your nations will be restored.

Will they be restored to the exact point when they failed? No. They will be restored from the latest backup.

When was the latest backup? We don't know. Probably sometime within the last week.

Will new nations be restored? Anything created after the last backup will be lost. Sorry. For what it's worth, new nation creation has now been disabled.

WHEN WILL IT BE FIXED!!!?? It will be fixed when it's fixed. Mods can't do anything. This is a job for Admin, and the last time took about 7 hours once they got started. As of this instant, they aren't online, and thus haven't started.

Be patient, and don't log on to your nations. That's all we can tell you right now.

SITUATION UPDATE

The restoration from the backup data should be done in a matter of hours- we've tested some nations that were caught in the fracas, and they appear to be operating normally. Expect an update from Salusa in the not-too-distant future!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/frisbeeteria/modedit.jpgAdded info on current status to first post

--------------------------------------------------------

I try to log into my nation with my normal password, I instead get this message that "your browser is not eaccepting cookies" and I get logged into "Nation 0 of 0", which is in the "region 0". It has a bare minimum description with an animal and currency of "0". It's motto is "0"

Anyway, I log out thinking it's just some sort of fluke. I try logging back in as Powerhungry Chipmunks: my password doesn't work. I try typing my password in again, and again the "invalid password" message comes back.

Then, I figure that somehow (I don't know how, as I haven't visited the Settings screen in several weks or months), I've messed up my password. So, I click on the "forgotten your password?" link. I type in my information (I actually try several different e-mail addresses, as I forgot which one I gave to my nation), I get this back: "You never supplied an e-mail address for your nation. Unfortunately, this means that NationStates cannot send you a new one, for security reasons."

This seems a mistake. I'm in the UN, and I post on the forum (did so just yesterday): I have to have supplied a valid e-mail address. Unless someone changed it as well as my password. But that wouldn't explain the "nation of 0 of 0" and the rest of the strangenesses I'm about to share.

http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/-1/page=UN_proposal

Look at how many 'deleted' delegates there are (my proposal has 3 of its delegates 'deleted', me being one of them).

Also, look at "The World":

http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/page=world

Two of the top 10 safest natons in the world are now "The 0 of 0". I clicked on one of them (apparently it used to be the nation "Dwiggles") and got a really strange region (a large line of code, maybe it can help you figure out what the problem is):

http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/-1/page=display_nation/nation=dwiggles

Anyway, what should I do? What is the problem? And, most importantly, (*lights babeque*) who's at fault?

Did you consider that the information wasn't there in the first place? Don't worry about losing your nation. At worst case they will roll back to an earlier backup; two or three days worth of nation change gone at the most. Might be most unfortunate for new delegates, but nothing that can't be solved.

The 0 of 0 is a tiny, pleasant nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-working population of 0 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded individuals appears to have no policy direction whatsoever. Income tax is unheard of. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Crime is a problem, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. 0's national animal is the 0 and its currency is the 0.

That's a relief to hear. Hope this nation and the other one in Lazarus is ok. When the reset takes place, will it go back, and to when? I may have to re-ask the nation in Lazarus to be recreated.

If your nation gets deleted and it was doing really bad look at it as a good thing, you now get a second chance to go back and try to correct the mistakes you made the first. Plus if the problem is effecting everyone, you can't expect the admin(s) to be done within a few minutes. there are tons of nations on this and using a backup file takes time depending on how much information was on the file.

Could I remind everyone that there are back ups to the game, so if the game crashes (like it is doing now) it can be restored? All of the information is saved on the server. All they have to do is fix this coding problem, call up the old server, and start it back up. The only damage will be everything that happened in the last maybe 10 hours befrore it crashed will be gone.

Guys don't freak. If you have extra time on your hands, maybe you could be USEFUL and warn your friends of this problem, or maybe try to find out what the problem is.

Mods, if it helps, nations are still being admitted into the UN.

I'm curious, for anyone who can remember the last time they had to revert to a backup copy of nations, how did it affect UN proposals?

I ask because my proposal is in queue now (becuase of my telegram campaign for it) and I wonder if it will be removed, or set back to the approvals it had whenever the last backup was made. From Fris's post at the top of the thread, it seems that only the nations would revert a previous version. But, obviously, there's still a lot we don't know about the problem or the solution. I'm fine with having to do more telegramming, I'm just hoping to find out whether or not I'll need to as soon as possible.

So, what happened last time they reverted to a backup?

NationStates is temporarily down

Earlier today (26 August 2005) our server experienced some data corruption, and the game is offline while we fix this. The fix will probably require restoring from a backup. We do not have an estimate for how long this will take nor when the backups will be from. I promise a status update by 7pm PST. (Unfortunately, I can't take the day off from work to fix this.)

Restoring from backup means, unfortunately, that all nations and regions will lose any changes made in the last 20 hours.

Any status updates will be posted to this page. Thank you for your patience.

I think that ways of making the servers more stable should be looked into.
This has nothing to do with server stability, and everyting to do with the userbase. We have "X" amount of server hard drive space, and "y" nations. For every Y+1 puppet created, a small (but cumulatively large) amount of disk space is required to store it. Even dead nations take up space, as does the game engine, as do your telegrams, as do all the regional messageboard posts, etc, etc.

When we get a surge of new players and puppets, space diminishes. Admins trim, archive, backlog, and otherwise try to balance the load, but twice now the total has snuck up on us and caused this problem. We can't magically append more disk space to the server - we'd have to move the game to a shiny new disk array, and that takes money. Perhaps you've noticed, but this game doesn't generate a lot of income for Max or Jolt, so don't count on somebody throwing money at the problem to fix it.

If you want to blame somebody, blame the spammers and rulebreakers who create nation after nation to disrupt regoins and forums. That's the ticket. Blame them.

 can I quote please that the date on the server down page is not actually 26/27 April 2005, it's 26 August 2005 And could you make backing-up more frequent please? That may not affect as much, but it will assure you and players that you've got the most recent back-up when you've got the problem. So I assume it's every week you do this. What about twice a week please?

f I am correct (which I may not, I don't know what Max is using) every time you create a backup, it uses more space on the server. This could cause more problems like this, and more work for Max and his team.

And thanks mods for all your hard work. We really appritiate this.

While it's sad that we lose 20 hours of work, considering the game speed (1 tick every 12 hours at best), we're not losing that much effort. Keep up the good work.

Tho might I make a small suggestion to the admins? Stop user sign ins (or even suspend game activity) if the disk space gets very low (trough an automated script naturally). That way you save yourselves a lot of hassle restoring backups and babysitting the doomsday thinking players. Also no actual gameplay will be lost in that case, so the players are also happy (except for the addicts, which can't go without 2 seconds of the game, but no way to keep them happy anyhow :) ).

I think the problems arise if they don't notice if the disk space is low, or when there is a serge of new members in a short span of time. There are other ways to help the system like delete nations so they can't be restored, but that is again time consuming...

Stop user sign ins (or even suspend game activity) if the disk space gets very low (trough an automated script naturally).

To clarify: A script that runs continuously or even a system alert that closes the game (or parts of it) when diskspace gets low. Maybe even staggered shutdown (close of more and more of the game the less diskspace there is).

No human intervention needed. The only thing the admins have to do then is clear up some diskspace and re-enable the game.

I had 75 puppets but I let almost all of them die several months back.

Edit: Actually they weren't all active at once. That's just a rough estimate of the number of the total number of puppets I've used since being on NS.

Normally the backup would be a compressed file saved elsewhere, away from hackers for one, and whatever caused the system to crash, probably a snapshot of the whole saved to disk. I'm glad to hear that it was only the last day's changes that will be lost. Not as bad as if it were a longer period of time. Should know more in seven hours, I hope.

Don't worry about it - I tried the same thing. I saw earlier on - about 5pm GMT - that my nation had ceased to exist (which I thought VERY odd) and tried to log in. Same problems.
I checked on Sunset RPG and NSCalculator, and both said that my nation no longer existed. However, if you go on now, no nations are showing up, it says that the information cannot be retrieved.

And if it hasn't already been said, the whole NS server is down because of data corruption, and the last backup of files etc was this morning.

I think Sunset and NSCalc. both retrieve the data from the NS server to make their calculations. Since you cannot access the server, I think the websites cannot access them, either, and they can't get the information to make the calculations. So they just say the NS board is down (which ist is) and wait for the site to be back up

Since Sal is still at work and we're communicating via email, I figured you guys might like a bit of an update.

So far in testing, it looks as though the restoration from backup data is going well- the nations we've tested thus far appear to be loading normally. Not sure how long it will take to completely restore everything, but the backup is not THAT out of date- I'd guesstimate between 10-20 hours, tops.

So breathe easy, everyone, your nations should be back to normal in a matter of hours!

Im not particularly interested in "blaming" anyone, Im interested in constructive things being done about the problem which clearly, for the reasons you have described, will not happen. Roll on NS2, I say, and then we can use some of the funds to prop up NS's diskspace addiction.

SITUATION UPDATE
Since Sal is still at work and we're communicating via email, I figured you guys might like a bit of an update.

So far in testing, it looks as though the restoration from backup data is going well- the nations we've tested thus far appear to be loading normally. Not sure how long it will take to completely restore everything, but the backup is not THAT out of date- I'd guesstimate between 10-20 hours, tops.

So breathe easy, everyone, your nations should be back to normal in a matter of hours!

Thanks Admin, for what must have been some determined and dedicated work to get us back up so fast.

Well done!

That means -- for anyone who's been watching these pages and not the login page, IT'S BACK!

Good job mods and admins! It's a good thing y'all backup regularly (unlike a certain community-making solution), or that it was just coincidence that you backed up prior to the data problems.

Thanks all. 95% of the game is back to normal. A remaining 4.9% will straighten itself out over the next few days. It looks like we lost 3 nations across the entire game. We've contacted the owners of two of them and are still trying to get ahold of the third. (0.002% of nations lost does't sound too bad to me.)

If you're not receiving new issues or having you popultion increase. Please leave and reenter your region. This is a known issue with restoring from backup and is probably affecting a few percent of our populace.

Right now we're reviewing our procedures to prevent this from happening again and improving our response for when it does.

So what this amounts to is that someone forgot to clean out the tmp folder and it became increasingly big? :D

Seriously, gj Salusa and all the admin.
