on one PC i get constant database errors when trying to get to the forums and have all day; while on this laptop its fine. none of my net settings or anything have changed since i turned off my computer last night (when everything was working fine).
both laptop and PC are using the same broadband connection and modem/router.
any ideas why this could be or how to fix it?
thanks :)

We've been getting lots of these requests, and have no obvious explanations. Suffice to say that people are not being idly forumbanned or deleted without cause.
I'm betting (as a IT support guy and not a Jolt admin, mind you) that there is some sort of technical problem with how Jolt is processing requests. I thought it might be a DNS issue earlier, but the symptoms don't match. In any case, I don't think the problem is on your end ... at least it's not caused by something on your end that you can change.
At least two people have reported successfully resolving this by closing their network or dialup connection and restarting it. No idea why that would work, but apparently it does sometimes. Give it a shot.

The same happened to me last night, almost every 5 seconds, but today its every half an hour. I tried resetting no good. Err... Kinda annoying.

I'm having the same problem. I've been trying for the entire day to connect to Jolt from my other computer. A couple of minutes ago I thought about trying this computer and it works! The other one still doesn't work. Don't know why.

Okay, let's have a few conspiracy theories about this.
I bet the admins had Jolt do this so that when they stop we will quit complaining about the forums comming closer and closer to the old forums.
I finally managed to get on with no hitch; using an appearant backdoor:
http://www.nation-states.net/ takes you right to the jolt forums; log in manually; and then enter NationStates...

The following are also back doors, in a way:
http://www.jolt.co.uk/
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/
However, I think you caught it when the forums themselves are up.

I had precisely the same problem... and after 12-18 hours of being unable to post, I am suddenly able to do so again.

I actually ended up trying that, to no effect. Just FYI.
But I'm just glad to be back.

Well, forums.jolt.co.uk still gives me the database error. As does trying to go through www.jolt.co.uk; and direct from the nationstates main page...
But www.nation-states.net works.... So, go figure...
I've had the same problem, with a DSL line. I'd say it is an internal Jolt thing, but I can't be sure.

I managed to get in through http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/, but I'm still getting errors when I try to load URL links. Most annoying.
Unfortunately, this appears to be a problem at Jolt's end, so there's little we can do but hope they get it fixed soon. I'm sure they're working on it.

I haven't been having much problems accessing the forums as frequently as other people seem to be. Is this a Jolt-wide problem or is their some common factor most of you share causing the problem?

Those of us posting have the best internet connections. The large majority haven't been able to get on at all since the problem started.
That said, I've got about four screens open and am using four different entrance tactics. However, Tekania's tactic I must advise against because it no longer allows me to log in.

I, too, have one of the better connections on NS. I haven't had any problems all day. That's why I asked my question. The very title of this topic also suggests it might be related to particular configurations of the computers involved.
It seems to have gotten better. Earlier today the forums were just damn near unusable regardless of which browser or OS combination I was using. Current browser:Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050306 Firefox/1.0.1 (Debian package 1.0.1-2). The same problems were occuring on another box with XP pro as well.
Well, I said it was getting better. When I tried to submit this I got a database error. Oh well.

I've got a cable modem and it been a toss up as to whether or not I could get in today.

You think that's bad? I'm on a 1Gbps connection, and I'm having trouble.

I had trouble all day yesterday, both from home (DSL) and work (T3). I would intermittently reach the forums, either through the NS nredirect or going directly to jolt.co.uk. By late last night (US EST) I was not able to get the forums at all. I TGed another player who's physically located in Europe, and he reported having no problems reaching the forums.
For the moment, 8AM my time, I seem to have gotten on without trouble...
Eh? Yeah, I log in from work. Damned if I know how much they pay for it.

I'm using Comcast Cable Internet access, running Windows XP and Firefox 1.0.4, and I've been wondering what everybody else has been talking about. I've experienced virtually no problems the last couple of days.
I'll test this on my laptop, which will be running SuSE 9.0 and Firefox 0.9 on the same connection via wireless (802.11g).
Everything seems to be back to normal today.

I had no problems yesterday, and none today. I'm on dialup, too.
Perhaps Jolt had some sort of bandwidth limiter running? Purposeful or accidental. In such a situation, the faster connections would have suffered more.

yes, apparently. Since I probably have the fastest, direct wireless satelite, and I could do barely one thing at a time.

What I meant is it would open a page and any link was Database error. So I could sit and admire our ns forum page, which I am sure you agree is interesting but not worth watching for more than a minute, but do nothing else. I had the same issue earlier. Now it seems ok.

I'm on a 10Mb Cavalier ReachDSL/xDSL (ADSL2) about 2 blocks from my node (less than 2000 feet) and had problems... Still do on occation, and only with Jolt services..... Everything else does just fine...

Hmm....are you sure? Sounds like this could be some sort of domain issue on Jolt's behalf.
Granted, I don't know what the specific problems are. I haven't had any issues.

No no no, sure that it's not a domain/DNS issue. That's what I meant.
