Where do I find out...

Is there anywhere I can find out the number of nations in each of the various categories? (i.e., how many Frightening Civil Rights, how many Excessive, etc., how many Corrupted Political Freedoms, etc.)

Or, is that info available as proportions rather than raw numbers?

I'd really appreciate getting this info. :)

Thanks.

Oh, and if this isn't the right forum for this, move it and I won't whine. ;)

That information isn't provided by the game. Someone may run a script that gathers this information, however.

Hmm....

Well, I'm not a complete idiot ;), so I'll risk asking: how would I go about doing that? Please explain real simple-like, please. :D

If you don't want to clutter up the board with that, you can PM me, &/or tell me where I could find a tutorial on this sort of thing.

BTW, if it matters, I've used wget, and understand it, so if this "script" is like that, I've got a headstart. ;)

EDIT: When I said "tell me where I could find a tutorial," I meant on the Internet; I don't expect there to be something like that on NationStates/Jolt, necessarily. :)

No idea. Didn't say that I ran those scripts. Also, it looks like none of the Tech regulars feel like sharing.

http://www.google.com is where I'd start...

I will here mention that national XML feeds are your friends.

I think what The Most Glorious Hack is getting at is that the game doesn't provide said service, which you probably understood. Currently, at least to my knowledge, their is no outside site [such as NSEconomy, NS Wiki, et cetera] which has a written script which chronicles said information.

As a consequence, I believe that unless you write your own script [PHP, XML] this information simply does not exist in an accessible form.

That's where I'd start, if I knew what to type in so I didn't get tens of thousands of hits, most being advanced stuff on details of making an XML-using app.

Actually, if
1) there was a list in text/XML format of all nation names,
and
2) I could figure out how to keep the servers from waiting 2+ minutes before responding to wget,
I could do it myself with what I know, and have on hand. BTW, this is a version of wget for Windows; I have to use Windows because I can't afford to risk repartitioning my HD to give room to Linux.

Well, do you know a site with a good tutorial in XML? :)

Some of the players run scripts that gather the XMLs on regions and players. You could probably get one of those scripts, dump it into a database and search on your own.

Of course, this would take up a rather large amount of harddrive space and be a bit of work, but...

Not to mention that running through the whole ove NS would take many hours. What you might manage to do is bug me a few times to get the data for you. I can get it faster w/o killing the server.

If you click on the link at the bottom ("A UN Category Survey (Official) taken in May of 2003"), you'll go to http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=nationstats
which has the same pie-chart as the nswiki. So, it's two years old.

Actually, it was finding the nationstates.net version that led me to ask my question; I'm hoping to get something newer than two years old. Also something with more than just the govt. types. :)

PS: SalusaSecondus, please make the totals of each type of Govt., level of Econ/CivilRights/PoliticalFreedoms available. Thank you very much. This has been an (un)official bug-ya. ;)

OK, been a couple of weeks, so it's time to play "Bug Sal" again. :)

Please, please, please rustle up this info for us, Oh Mighty One!

These things take a while, be patient! Especially with Sal's new job and the other stuff... It'll come!

Also, if you like making lists, wait for the "Most Liberal" which ranks the Civil Rights of each nation, and tabulate. Then the "Fastest-Growing Economies" ranks the economy level, and the "Most Politically Free" ranks the Political Freedoms.

I can already tell you that there are 228 "Corrupted" political freedoms nations, and about 300 "Widely Abused", but not much more (and this is only based on the fact that I was ranked 229th in the world for the most politically free nations).
