WE KNOW THAT Jolt Forums are giving "Internal Server Errors"

I got the following twice while trying to post:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, admin@jolt.co.uk and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apache/1.3.33 Server at nsforums.jolt.co.uk Port 80

Both errors occured within the last five minutes and all I did in both cases was click on the New Topic button at the top-right of the screen.

Just reload the page and you'll be fine. Jolt is straining under the weight of the forums.

Is it because of NationStates?

Hmm. Looks like we need to begin scouting for the next set of NS forums...

*shudder* No. He'd probably block Firefox or Linux or something.

You may not log in to Jennifer Government: NationStates for the following reasons:

You are using SuSE Linux 9.0. Please switch to Windows before continuing
You are using the Firefox browser. Please switch to Internet Explorer before continuing.

Thank you for using Microsoft products: demonstrating capitalizm at its best!

(for the record, this is my Windows desktop but I can easily boot up my Linuxized laptop if somebody needs me to prove the point.)

Perhaps because of all teh forum members, topics, threads, posts, etc...?

it's kind of like that party described in the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, that moved from city to city taking all the alchohol and food, til the city was crashed, and moved to the next one.... we use up the server resources until we crash it, and move onto the next

I got six of those internal errors today, all at the same time, in different tabs.

More evidence that we're headed for a major crash, I think...

That was kinda my thought this weekend, so I started pulling some of my favorite links off the forum and did a bit of house keeping.

This raises a question that I've been curious about ... is it possible to tell how many of the players in the game have actually created Jolt accounts or visited Jolt?

I keep getting either a "Error 404 - cannot display page" message, "No Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster
" message and "Internal Server Error" message when I press links here on the forums. The thing is that they usually are displayed when I press CTRL + R (reload the page). What is the problem, because it is irritating when it happens every second time you press a link. Anyone else have the same problems?

Yeah. Pretty much all of us. There are multiple threads on the various ills that Jolt is visiting on us. Not much we can do but complain to the admins and kick the hamster a few times.

Ok. Thanks. Any chance of it being fixed any time soon?

Ok. Point taken. I'll lay off now. Thanks for answering Fris. Appreciate it.

Feel free to close this thread if you wish.

About 80% of the time today, whenever I click on a thread, it says "the page cannot be found." What's up?

I keep getting "Internal Server error 500" every third or fourth time I try to load a forum... I will attempt a screenshot next time it happens, hopefully it isn't anything major (though prolly Jolt's problem)

EDIT: Sorry if I didn't notice the sticky earlier... I kinda dumb like that

same as this thread (probably) says: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=412790 (i can't read it).

i can view the forum fine, but every time i go to any thread all i get is

There seems to have been a slight problem with the jolt.co.uk public forums database.
Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser.

An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the problem persists.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

i've had this lots before, but never for this long (going on 2 hours at a guess), and usually if its saying there's a problem with the database, it means i cant get onto the NS forums at all (whereas i can view the forums fine, just not any threads).

i'm confused

Jolt has periodic times when the server goes down. I consider it a normal routine now...hehehe.

At one time it was down the entire day....complaining to the NS mods won't help at all. Unless they have OMG LOLZ SUPER JOLT FIXING PROBLEMS...and if they did, I think they could find out by themselves that there's a big TECHNICAL ERROR written on the page.

Solution: DITCH JOLT!!!

Would you rather go back to our old forums, where we were lucky if we could actually get into the forums at anytime in the day? ;)

I think that everyone, having been on Jolt for a decent time now, is getting spoiled...

Maybe its time for a massive thread DEAT.... Kill everything that hasn't been active for the last 5 months or so...

Somebody suggested that somewhere, and I think it got shot down by the mods.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the thread.

While we are by far the biggest, we are far from being the only folks in the Jolt databases:
Forum Threads Posts
-------------------------------------
NationStates 115,625 2,963,610
Spam 6,364 1,110,510
delta force 56,713 939,512
castle wolfenstein 14,540 223,810If Jolt admins think our thread / post volume is causing the problem, I'm sure we'll discuss it with them and come to an accomodation. If the problem is traffic (which I suspect it is), a thread purge would do nothing but wipe out our history.

I find it tragically fitting that the first thread started by me to be stickied in this forum involves me bitching about something.

I have been recently encountering a new error I believe is related. It's where the Jolt Forums forget they have forums (an error with the forum display part of the address sometimes not registering as part of the website). There have also been recent errors with the Jolt forums refusing to recognize names, but both of those are extremely rare.

Yep.

Everyone who is crying about downtime obviously wasn't around back in the day when you were LUCKY if you could get on once a day. The forums were so bad that posts would get eaten or posted half a dozen times, and that was if you were fortunate enough to get on in the first place.....

I understand now about the database errors. I had only gotten them a few times off and on in the couple weeks I've been in the game. Usually refreshing solved it every time. But this evening I got them solid on any and every attempt to re-enter the forum (was already in and posting at the time it stopped working for me) for over 2 hours straight -almost 3. And if I tried to "continue to forum" or refresh, I got the database error message earlier displayed that said it sent an e-mail to the technical staff. I'm just glad I can get back on now. I can only imagine how annoying it must have been on the original system you were mentioning!

HEAR HEAR!

Look folks, we can bitch all we want, the truth is that this is better than the old forums, take it from a guy who was here when you couldn't get on before 9 PM EST.

Also, can Jolt just cut us loose? I don't think they can without risking loosing the rights to NS2, or risk getting sued. But, just for peace of mind, can they cut us loose?

I miss those days, *sobs.* The poor servers may have been rubbish, but it gave us all something to bitch about, and it was great when you got online and you had a few pages to read, the old serves though terrible, held a certain magic about them.
