This is some really interesting data. I've been wondering about the average population for a while. Do you think that it will go up or down as time passes?
I think that it will go down, because the growth of this game seems to be near-exponential. Population growth is linear (I think).

It was a sudden explosion in the early days, but it settled down after a while.

If anybody is interested, I've been taking grab samples of of the number of nations, number of regions, number of UN members, and number of UN Delegates since Nov. 2004. There are some gaps in my data, but I was trying to make graphs along these lines:

That's really cool. Do you have a graph of the number of regions and delegates?

I have the data in a spreadsheet, and can email it to anybody who wants a copy. The graphics I have are only for Nov 2004 and Dec 2004, and were focusing on UN members relative to non-members. I was hoping to get to converting the 2005 data into graphics illustrating the times resolutions were on the UN floor sometime this summer.

This started when I wondered if a UN resolution *increases* or *decreases* UN membership. Often players will leave the UN saying, "This resolution is too liberal! My nation wants no part of this." I wanted to test to see if the drop in membership was significant or not.

So I've been collecting data ever since then and I've yet to spend the time to really make a well written conclusion. But my first impression is that when most players "leave" the UN, they put a puppet back in again ... the net result: a slight increase in the number of nations in the world and no change in UN membership. But I also see a relative trend where UN membership tracks pretty well with nations in the game ... so I'm not so sure my first impression is correct here.

Can you do that? Just wondering; I'm not requesting anything.

Yeah, if I wanted to, it would be very easy, we're not allowed to though.

The only time that I had an odd population was a long time ago when I had a population of 1000 billion for about a day. I did that to demonstrate a vulnerability in the code before I could fix it. (yes, I was already on staff at the time)

Believe it or not, but late Dec. 2004 and some if not all of Jan. 2004 we were in decline. The earlier image I posted was just for Nov. 2004, but the file has the graphs sans UN resolutions through today (tonight). My plan was that twice a year I'd actually look at a 6 month window.

I too would love to get a count for the number of actual players.

And the census data is very interesting.

edit:
It is just too bad we can't actually count the number of distinct nations that voted on resolutions ... delegate endorsements throw the number off. Even though we know how many nations there are in the UN today and how many were in 28 today ago (the different being the next change due to new members - inactive nations), I just don't know how to really figure out how many nations are abstaining from voting. It is a shame, because I'd very much like to get a better feel for how many players are participating by voting on UN resolutions.

Anyway, is there a way to know the total number of nations created since the beginning, not just the ones still active? The main page only says "Over 1 million", not how much over.

Holy Patootie, that's quite a few nations. Hell, that's bigger than my entire home-town. Unless I'm mistaken that's even more than the population of Ancient Rome during its hey-dey (referring to Rome the city, not the entire Empire). Kickass, we beat Rome! w00t!

Roman citizens didn't have the option of creating puppet people. I suspect that the number of actual players is rather less.

I track both UN and overall numbers. I just use the UN to determine the minimum number of unique players (assuming that most of the multis are caught of course).

30% of nations are in the feeders.

36% of regions have 1 nation in them.
17% of regions have 2 nations in them.

Thus, over half of all regions in the game have 2 or fewer nations.

Two questions:

1) What was the first nation created on NationStates (back in 2002 or something, whenever it was started)?

2) Is there a way to calculate that nation's population if it existed continuously, increasing in increments of approx. 6 million a day?
The Mindset

Maxtopia, assuming ~12 Nov 2002 (the time of the first UN proposal by him), at an average growth of 6 million/day, would be about 5,262,000,000 (5.2 billion). It'd probably be higher due to the various pop bugs though.
