Highly Irritating!

Several times lately, I have written rather long posts and hit the enter button only to have the post take forever to load and often getting a "Cannot find" message. When I hit the browser "back" button, the message I took such care with is gone!

Is there nothing which can be done about this???

I've had that happen too. Now anything that's more than a paragraph, i copy and paste to notepad.... just in case.

Cross-posted from another of my boards ....

Dammit to HELL! I was just posting a long, involved post, and when I hit the Submit button the damn boards told me I needed to log in. When I hit the Back arrow, my post was gone. How can I prevent this?

We're not sure why this happens, but it does. Typically it happens on systems with firewalls, cable modems, or corporate computers, but it can happen to anyone.

Simple solution: Before you click the Submit button, hit Crtl-A to highlight your post, and Ctrl-C to copy it. If the board logs you off, log back in, go back to the topic, Reply, and Ctrl-V to paste.

Permanent solution: Instead of growling, fix your browser's cache settings to hold on to the information. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options, select the General tab, choose Settings, and then check Every time you start Internet Explorer. In Netscape, click Edit, Preferences, double-click Advanced, and click Cache. Set the memory cache to at least 1024KB, and the disk cache to a minimum of 7680KB. Then clear both caches. Note that you may have to click your browser's refresh button to see a revisited page's dynamic data.

When you get a random logoff, click Ctrl-N to open a new browser window. Go to the logon screen and log in as normal. Go back to your original screen, and you will be able to post just like before. I always keep two browser windows open anyway - makes cutting and pasting much easier.

Thanks to PC World.com (http://www.pcworld.com/features/article/0,aid,103763,pg,2,00.asp) for this fine technical answer.

When it happens to me, I can just hit "back" and the post is still there.
I guess there's somethnig set up differently.

Yeah, your page cache settings. See the previous post. Note that this problem doesn't exist in Opera, and probably doesn't in Firefox.

Ultimately, the main problem is a caching issue with Jolt, and I think we've slapped them several times over it. Unfortunately, not even an NS Admin can do much but complain to Jolt. Resolving it is up to them.

No, it doesn't exist in FireFox. FF always caches the contents of forms so you never lose your posts.

I have a word document that I compose all of my longer posts in. I run a quick spell check, copy, and paste. I have noticed that at least half the time when I click to post my comment, it will process indefinitely. When I shut down that window, and open the thread in a new one, my post will be duplicate and sometimes triplicate.

Are you people being PAID to advertize Firefox? It's always Firefox does this, Mozilla doesn't do that, It's so great, yada yada yada. Be boring and stick with Internet Exploder for once!

I'm done ranting now. You can delete this if you want.

Zooke touched upon this briefly, but I'll state it a little more clearly:

Draft your post in a word processor then attempt to post. Regardless of your web browser, you don't lose your post this way unless your computer crashes altogether.

I regularly use the right click/copy function to make sure that I have a current copy of my post available when that happens.

The *posts* went through for me about 25% of all attempts. It was just that by the time *I* got through there were four posts waiting for me. :D

Firefox is fast, reliable and spam free. Does Exlorer have any of those? I think not.

Attention: This solution is not applicable to Mac users. You require to use the 'toolbox' to copy/cut/paste, and not teh keyboard.

Just had to say that :p

Just had to say that :pNope. Just to command-c to copy and command-v to paste. Also, use command-x to cut (delete the text and copy it).
