Hi, I am new to the game and I noticed that my country is, "remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape."

Is this feature chosen randomly when a country starts the game? I mean, do other nations have the possibility of starting as a "lush tropical paradise?"

Also, is it possible to change the landscape by voting on a forest measure?

The description of your nation is based on the questions you answer when you founded the nation, and the issues you answer later in the game.

I'm guessing you didn't answer your questions in an environmentally-friendly manner, so the game decided you had a barren landscape. You can, through issues, change this, but you're going to have to answer them all in tree-hugger style, and it's going to take a while. Be careful, though, because doing that may also reduce your economy.
